The Mexican faction of the international hacktivist group released a video in which they threaten a criminal organization with the publication of their identities if they won't release a member of the collective which was kidnapped by them.

According to the Houston Chronicle, the Zetas group, one of the largest crime syndicates is Mexico, kidnapped an Anonymous member at a street protest.

“You made a huge mistake by taking one of us. Release him," says a Spanish speaking masked man in the video posted by the hackers.

"We cannot defend ourselves with a weapon … but we can do this with their cars, homes, bars, brothels and everything else in their possession. It won't be difficult; we all know who they are and where they are located."

It looks as on November 5 they might reveal the data belonging to Zetas associates which include police officers, taxi drivers and even journalists who are affiliated with the group, sustaining their actions by constantly defaming the military.

Even though it might seem a good thing to publish the identities of the bad guys, the Zetas are known to be violent and some voices believe that such a move could have a disastrous outcome as the cartel might go after bloggers and anyone else they suspect of having anything to do with the operation.

As it turns out, while some Anonymous hackers fight against bankers and financial systems, others have a much bigger battle on their hands. In places where people shot first and then ask questions, such threats could have serious consequences.

Are they Bold and Courageous, or, just plain stupid? I am leaning towards the latter! ;)

EDIT: What, no other comments? I can not be the only one that thinks this is really not a wise thing to do.

Yeah, agreed I think that they've bitten off more than they can chew... the ammount of money that these gangs hold will surely be used in order to turn the heat up on them (anonymous) by means of offering rewards for snitches or other online hackers services to turn back on them. Either way, that's just the start of it as I think murders will not be out of the question.

Was meant to comment on it earlier but been very busy day for me.

I find it kind of cool how they are going against them with their smarts instead of brute force, if i were the cartel id be a little nervous of what information they would have on them

But am sure they also have enough money to do the same thing back to them, online war - locate - kill?

‘Anonymous’ Operation Against Mexican Cartel Is Back On

The masked-members of the hacktivist collective Anonymous have done another about face and are again planning to post identifying information online about the civilian associates of Los Zetas, one of Mexico’s largest and most lethal drug cartels, just days after reportedly canceling the plans, according to the Anonymous Iberoamerica blog and former Anonymous spokesman Barrett Brown.

The hacktivists apparently reconsidered the cancellation of Operation Cartel, first reported by Mexican newspaper Milenio on October 30, after receiving an outpouring of support from others online, also acknowledging that even if one or a few individuals leaked information under the banner of Anonymous, the entire organization would be deemed a target by the cartel.

“We go forward with the transaction, as well we have been requested,” read a post on the Anonymous Iberoamerica blog (translated). “If someone makes an action on behalf of Anonymous, criminals will not have the insight to tell who denied or who refused…We’re all on the same ship, sink or float. However, we encourage everyone who does not trust enough in their ability to refrain from participating in this operation.”

Anonymous shifts anti-Zetas operation to safer channels

Following the murder of multiple bloggers and reports that the Mexican drug cartel has hired narcohackers to help track Anonymous members for violent retaliation, the hacktivists have put into play a process that will hopefully shield Anonymous identities.

I like this quote...

“THIS IS NOT A GAME,” Anonymous is urging members. “Your life and the lives of others can be in danger. Be very careful, and avoid jeopardizing third parties.”

They should have thought of this before they decided to be stupid. Now that they find out the drug cartels really mean business and are killing people, they've realized they might have bitten off more than they can chew.

Drug cartels definitely have the money to invest in tracking these "hacktivists" down, and unlike the government, these people will just shoot those they find.

Probably your most stupid move yet, anonymous...

Anonymous backs off in clash with Mexican drug cartel

On-again-off-again plans by the Anonymous collective to publish details of the infamous Zetas drug cartel and their associates were finally cancelled over the weekend, following the supposed release of a kidnapped member of the hacktivist collective.

A statement from Anonymous Iberoamerica states that the still unnamed member of the collective was freed, adding that "although bruised, we can say he is safe and well". Los Zetas are as well-known for kidnap and murder as they are for drug running in their native Mexico. They kidnap victims for money and those they can't turn a swift profit on are usually killed.

"Mexican members of Anonymous told local media that they had decided to cancel #OpCartel, following a debate 10 days ago over fears that the operation could place innocent people at risk from reprisal attacks."

That's one motiv why they back off from the clash, the other one is, i think they felt the cold iron from the guns on their neck, or they recovered after getting drunk and realised what stupid thing they are doing.

Anonymous should really stop at these unless they want themselves screwed badly.
