AOL Shield - Get an extra layer of protection when browsing online

The AOL Shield browser provides protection with a whole host of advanced security features, so you can worry less about online threats as you go about your day. Shopping, banking, social media - we have ways to help protect your information.

Browsing protection for the things you do every day

  • Anti-keylogging technology provides real-time encryption that hides what you enter on your keyboard from hackers.
  • Screen grab protection can stop malware from taking pictures of your monitor as you enter sensitive data.
  • Stop scam websites from loading so you don’t get tricked into revealing personal details

I gave this a peek... in Sandboxie.

During installation it wants you to install the latest Adobe Flash version (downloads it for you). Version 20. It's based off of Chromium (I don't know what version). It clearly is using features from this company SentryBay - Security that works as the URL it downloads from is directly from them (caught by Norton when it asked me if I want to allow network access + it adds a Sentry Bay folder to your drive - AOL didn't do crap to make this I bet. lol)

You need to restart to use it full ability apparently. I'm not doing that. Might be a pretty great vault of a browser though or it might be overstuffed with security if it even works that is.

Yes this browser support extensions but may have problems with some due to security features in this browser. uBlock Origin works fine. In the screenshot above, I have it installed and all the features that's in the browser is also in the about page.

I wonder how it compares to another security-oriented Chromium build, Comodo Dragon, my favorite Chromium family browser.

AOL Shield's currently based on Chromium 46. I installed it on my real machine and restarted. After first restart it shows a message telling configuring secure environment blabla.. I hate that they set the new tab page as their site..

Tested with Zemana test tools, the "Shield" wouldn't work for me at all.

First browser which asks for a reboot after IE ;)

Note that I leave the configs as default.
As the homepage stated all keystrokes would be encrypted which will be shown on the top right of title bar - I tried restart both the browser and the system several times yet I still couldn't see it there.
Tried Zemana's keylogger & screen capturer test tools to verify if it (still a bit hopefully) works - sadly both tools were able to catch everything happened inside browser. I was disappointed enough to test its download/scam/phishing protection.. then uninstalled it.

Need to mention that I first tried this browser in timefreeze mode which means I could not reboot. Weirdly that it successfully stopped Zemana's keylogger (couldn't capture any keystroke - not the encrypted ones) - but not its screen capturer  Maybe I'll re-test AOL Shield later..

Well as far in this case, AOL Shield Browser can be compare nearly to Safepay of Bitdefender and other in-related AV products that incorporate virtualization/encryption techniques but since of course extension support is exist hence the overall effectiveness rely on other tools.
