Fifty years ago today—April 11, 1970—the world watched as Apollo 13 launched towards the skies. Over the years, the rest has become both history and NASA legend. You may know the Tom Hanks-led Hollywood rendition of the story, but as part of our docuseries celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Apollo program, Ars connected directly with some of the brave people of NASA involved directly in this harrowing experience. Given this launch anniversary, we're resurfacing the episode of Apollo: The Greatest Leap focused on saving the crew of Apollo 13. As Apollo 13 astronaut Fred Haise floated in the tunnel snaking between the Lunar Module and Command Module, he heard—and felt—a loud bang. Around him, the two vehicles began to contort. Then, the metal walls of the tunnel crinkled as the spacecraft shuddered.
