Apple will take the wraps off new iPhones in September, but according to a recent survey, everybody seems to be waiting for the 5G model coming next year.

Piper Jaffray says it’s seeing what it describes as “strong interest” in the Apple customer base for a 5G iPhone. The only problem is that this particular model won’t arrive this year, but only in 2020.

The company says it conducted a survey to determine how many buyers would go for a 5G iPhone, and surprisingly, no less than 18 percent of the respondents said they are willing to pay around $1,200 to purchase such a model.

While this is clearly a new record for an iPhone, it shows that Apple customers are ready to spend even more on smartphones as long as they introduce new technologies, as it’s the case of 5G support. At this point, the most expensive iPhone is the XS Max with 512GB storage at $1,449.

Three iPhones launching this year
On the other hand, the survey revealed that interest in the upcoming iPhone generation due in September is pretty low, which means that more buyers are waiting for the 2020 lineup that includes a 5G model rather than for the iPhones launching this year.

Apple will take the wraps off three different models in 2019, and all of them are direct successors to the versions that are already on the market. iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR will all receive substantial upgrades under the hood.

The 2019 iPhone lineup is likely to be the last one that comes with an LCD model, as Apple is expected to make the full switch to OLED beginning with 2020. In addition to the LCD screen, the 2019 iPhone XR is also likely to come with two different cameras and a battery update versus the previous model.
