Apple documents state that users in India and China can create an Apple ID using their mobile number. This also applies to Android users. Would you rather use your mobile number or email address as your account ID? Can users from other countries create their Apple ID or Google account with their mobile number?

What are the pluses and minuses of using a mobile number to create an Apple ID or Google account?

Apple IDs you create with mobile numbers work for all Apple services, unlike Google accounts that don't work for Gmail, right?

Yes, users in India and China can create an Apple ID using their mobile number. However, this feature is not available globally. Google also allows users to create an account using a mobile number in certain regions.

The benefits of using a mobile number include ease of access and recovery, and not needing to remember an additional email address. However, the downside could be potential security risks if your phone is lost or stolen.

For Apple IDs created with mobile numbers, they can indeed be used for all Apple services. Google accounts created with a phone number can access most Google services, but they may not have a Gmail account by default.

Personally, I prefer using an email address because free email aliasing services, like DuckDuckGo and AdGuard, are widely available. Additionally, my primary email has been in use for years, whereas my mobile number might change.

For the Google account I created with an email, I had the option to choose a separate Gmail address. I assume the same option exists when creating a Google account with a mobile number.

In fact, the majority of new Google accounts or email addresses might come from this method, as many Android users likely sign up for Google accounts primarily using their phone numbers.

How can I verify the availability of an @icloud email address? I'm making a new account on my iPad. Account creation via settings results in the message: "You cannot create an account at this time." When I used the "forgot password" option with the email, I received an "invalid or unsupported address" message. I received an error message, "You cannot use an existing address to create a new account," while trying to sign up with the "Music" app. Is this an Apple glitch, or does the account I'm attempting to create already exist?

The error messages you're receiving suggest that the @icloud email address you're trying to create might already be in use. Unfortunately, Apple doesn't provide a way to check the availability of an @icloud email address before creating an account. Try creating an account with a different email address. If the problem persists, contact Apple Support for further assistance.

If I sign up with my phone number, can I change it to an email later? If so, will this process release the mobile number, or will I have two accounts?

Yes, you can change your Apple ID from a mobile number to an email address later. However, this won't create a new account or release the mobile number. The number will still be associated with your Apple ID for security purposes, but your primary Apple ID will be the email address.

Is it possible to delete the mobile number afterward? I'd prefer not to link a phone number to this account.

While you can change your Apple ID from a mobile number to an email address, you cannot completely remove the mobile number from the account as it is used for security and recovery purposes. However, you can change the mobile number linked to your Apple ID if needed.

No, a phone number is not strictly necessary when creating an Apple ID using a third-party email like Gmail. However, adding a phone number can enhance account security and help with account recovery if you forget your password.

A phone number is now a mandatory addition to your Apple account.

How do I set up an iPad profile to use Cloudflare ZeroTrust DNS? Does Apple Configurator on iPad allow for DNS resolution via DNS-over-HTTPS?

As of iOS 14, Apple introduced support for encrypted DNS, including DNS-over-HTTPS (DoH). However, this needs to be configured manually.

To use Cloudflare's ZeroTrust DNS on your iPad, you'll need to install a configuration profile. Unfortunately, Apple Configurator does not currently support DNS-over-HTTPS directly.

You can create a configuration profile using Apple's Profile Manager (part of macOS Server) or a third-party tool. Alternatively, you can use a VPN or networking app that supports encrypted DNS, such as Cloudflare's 1.1.1.1 app.

Yes, the iMazing Profile Editor app does allow you to configure DNS settings, including DNS-over-HTTPS. You can create a custom configuration profile with your desired DNS settings and then install it on your iPad using the iMazing app. Please ensure to follow the correct syntax and settings for DNS-over-HTTPS as per Apple's guidelines.

Yes, you can sign a configuration profile. To do this, you need a signing certificate from a trusted certificate authority (CA). Once you have the certificate, you can use the 'codesign' command in the Terminal app on your Mac to sign the profile. Note that this is a somewhat advanced process and generally only necessary if you're distributing profiles to many devices, such as in an enterprise or educational setting.

All I have to do is install the unsigned profile, right?

Yes, you can install an unsigned profile on your device, but you will be warned that it isn't signed. To proceed, you'll have to manually trust the profile in Settings > General > Profiles & Device Management. Please ensure the profile comes from a trusted source to avoid potential security risks.
