Hi-

I have an older style iPad running iOS 9. It wont update to iOS 10 and therefore wont be capable of running iOS11 either.

My question is whether this poses a security problem if I want to carry out online banking or do other online activities. Whilst I understand that the iPad wont be getting security updates from Apple, I also thought that iOS is pretty much immune to Malware etc and so would remain safe to use.

What do the experts on this forum think ?

Thanks.

Apple is not immune, where ever you have gathered this information from is incorrect. However these things are not as prevalent on Apple, same with Linux. And yes that is a huge security risk.

I would say that you *should* be fine because most hackers aren't targeting iOS but there is always a chance that you could have a problem. I'd just say to be careful when you're browsing the web.

What mechanism could malware use to infect an iPad running out of date security software ? Surely all iOS apps are validated by the Apple Store and tested. Its not possible to download any other type of software, including malware. That's why I am assuming that old versions of iOS remain safe.

old anything is more of a risk (BSD, iOS, Solaris, Windows, Linux) it all depends on your level of willingness to accept the risk, the older the OS/device is the further that risk will increase
