Obviously, the test was not hard enough to produce significant differences in protection levels between the various products; all horses know how to trot.
If you want to see a product fail, look in MT testing results.

It can be argued that there are no such tests among the labs. It can be argued that AVLab.pl and MRG Effitas try the most, but then there are those that say they try but don't get it right. So, Average Joe is once again holding the bag trying to figure out what it is what if she\she even manages to get to point where she\he is reading the reports, let alone any of the debate.

All Average Joe sees and cares about is big, tall, all green bars and 5 stars. Anything less just won't do. And - if they are inclined to spend their money - green bars and 5 stars is what most base their purchase screening and selections upon. The few more discerning might go the extra steps and do research ending up on a site like MalwareTips.

However, since you have different labs reporting different results, a lot of Average Joes that look at the different lab results are left scratching their heads.

But it's no big deal, the vast majority of Average Joes don't ever look at lab test pictures, and if they do they don't pay much attention. They certainly aren't inclined to pay for a security soft in the first place so what the AV test labs report doesn't matter one way or the other anyway.

The story is that we always criticize these tests, but the truth is that we always see them.
We must recognize that it is a reference, and sometimes it seems strange to us that our favorite Av is not in the best position ... But they do not always analyze with the same samples of malware and, therefore, the variation of each test is evident .. .
But if we see Kaspersky or Bitdefender as (example), it always appears in the first places. There must be a reason?
The reason is that they are good AVs:)

This is a hilariously true observation. Then and now.

One thing you can hang your hat on with these studies is that they are powerful marketing tools, and the vendors who participate in the symbiotic relationship wear the lab-badges proudly on their advertising sleeves. The antivirus industry is multi-billions. These comparative labs have a huge and vested stake there. And there's the association with "free" and "of lesser quality."

They can market all they want, but did you notice how Microsoft is creeping up? 100% in protection, a bit of a hit in performance and a bit of a hit in usability, but normal user would just notice that 100% protection and it's free with Windows 10. The Avast's and the Bitdefender's better start coming up with some new ideas because Microsoft is on their heels.
