In 2009 I installed Avast antivirus and then complete protection and no special thought and becomes heavy in the daily updates and scans.
Advise the COMODO INTERNET SECURITY or Webroot, are excellents, lightweights and efficients.

Personal opinion from cdnsempre. Nothing more nothing less. However he/she is not referring to the quality of the signatures.

avast! has a slower boot time than Comodo for example, so the RAM usage is irrelevant here.

On a side note, since you refer to RAM, Comodo uses less than 10Mb on my system while avast uses around the same.

Each system will react differently.
