Just an observation...

Now days the rage is defender.

But in the past it seems it was, Comodo, then Emsisoft, and before that is was Zemana,. I'm sure there are others.

These discussions were stated with fervor, and often those who issued them, felt as if they had the high ground, similar to those who decry registry cleaners.

It wasn't quit this bad, but close... "When you get to my level of expertise, you'll learn not to use such software"...

But the rage continues, with no winner in sight. Except maybe defender and Kaspersky, who knows that might change next month...

Everything changes, but people like to believe that they what they trust has not changed for worse. Apps are bad to judge they change with each version.
Defender sucked for years then it got better, then it got worse. Like Outlook, it was bad, Outlook New was actually pretty good, now it is a sucky webapp.
As for AVs, Spybot was great, as well as Ewido or Superantispyware, now they are gone, Panda, Kaspersky and Comodo are currently in a huge free fall.

Hi Not sure why Kaspersky is included there. I just installed Panda VPN, and Kaspersky Free. I update K, 2-3 times a day, and don't go to anything risky. Tons of people love Kaspersky too.

There were many hyped up software here certainly. It's kind of seasonal.

I remember when the hype was on F-Secure.
I remember when it was on WiseVector for its AI.

I don't think it's certainly erroneous for this to happen. Sometimes software is hyped up because it's behaving well and protecting great. but this doesn't last forever, and usually a couple of well-done independent tests are sufficient to bring the hype down.

Things change. Everything changes. I don't see it's a very big problem, just don't drink the kool aid and test test test yourself and your fine.

Companies get bought out by bigger companies all the time, companies can't monetize software and close, some companies get left behind and don't adapt to current trends, and then government's step in and shutter software, ban it or restrict it's use. It's the nature of the beast. Forums like these serve a very important purpose, to gain and swap knowledge of current threats, software trends and new technology.
