Welcome to MalwareTips. These are my main suggestions:
- Use a good AV (Bitdefender Free, Avast Free, etc)
- Enable File Reputation (probably you already have Smartscreen enabled, check that again)
- Add a good ad blocker to Chrome such as Adguard or uBlock (perhaps Adguard as it is more user friendly). Enable Malware blocking settings then.
- Run a second opinion scanner such as Zemana Portable at least once a month.

Any question, please ask. We are here to help you.

No need to install another av, WD is doing a fine job with smartscreen and some Anti malware on real time

Here are some suggestions of my own:
1. Pump up UAC settings to max
2. Enable OS File Reputation
3. Add an on-demand scanner such as Emsisoft Emergency Kit or HitmanPro
4. uBlock, HTTPSEverywhere extensions to your browser
5. Make proper backups via software like Paragon Backup & Recovery (free available): Backup & Recovery Free Edition - Overview
6. Scan new downloads at VirusTotal - Free Online Virus, Malware and URL Scanner and run new downloads which are unknown in Sandboxie (free)

Windows Defender is fine so you do not need to switch AV unless you need additional protection features due to thinking you are a weak link. In that case I would recommend Avast Free Anti-Virus with hardened mode enabled.

Good luck. Stay safe.

Given the fact that you have had a recent infection I would recommend adding some real time protection.
  • Enable UAC to max and enable smartscreen
  • Avast Free is a very good option and a good combination with Windows Firewall.
  • Once you have that installed it would be a good idea to scan your system with AVAST.
  • If you need help configuring AVAST from it's default settings you can look here Avast
  • On demand scanners are programs that do not run in real time, and are free, but allow you to scan your system when you want and add a layer of protection by possibly catching something that your real time protection may have missed.
  • Usually one or two on demand scanners will be sufficient such as Zemana Antimalware,MalwareBytes Antimalware,Emsisoft Emergency Kit,ESET Online Scanner.
  • If you install one or two of these it would be a good idea to scan your system with your on demand choices following real time scan
  • Consider a Password manager such as LastPass or keep your passwords in a safe place such as written down somewhere.
  • You can use uBlock Origin in Chrome as your AdBlocker
  • Consider CCleaner for your system utility. It is very safe and very easy to use no matter what your experience.
  • Consider some other type of system backup solution such as Macrium Reflect or AOMEI Backupper as both offer very good free versions.
Thanks for sharing your config and feel free to ask questions if you need help :)

Please enable SmartScreen, it is very important to avoid possible infections. Follow suggestions about a good AV, Windows Defender is improved with the latest versions, but, I would suggest to you to switch to a better solution, even free. There are plenty of free good antiviruses: Avast Free, Bitdefender Free, Avira Free, Panda Free and so on.

Then, add ZAM Free and MalwareBytes.

And I would add also SandBoxie Free (and use it while browsing to have more protection).

Why not extensions? Please add uBlock Origin, HTTPS Everywhere, Disconnect.

About System Utilities add at least CCleaner Free.

If you choose to install Avast, I would suggest you to follow this guide: How to setup Avast Internet Security for Maximum Protection (2016 Guide)

Please follow suggestions about backups.

You have to cover better the main layers of protection to have a solid and powerful security configuration.

Thanks for sharing.

After following the above members' suggestions, I recommend you take a look at the following solutions for performing system backups:
OR
OR
In most cases, the default Windows Backup and Restore feature should suffice.
You also have data backups covered, so you're pretty much good to go as far as I'm concerned. Thanks for sharing your config with us! :p
