1) Is it possible to completely hide the bookmarks bar, or even remove it?
2) Is it possible to set a new tab page of my choice without using an extension?

Both of these are possible in Slimjet but Chrome seems far less configurable.

Yes its possible, the settings will apply successfully.

Not that I can see, and confirmed by Google support. It is only possible to change the new tab page by using an extension such as New Tab Redirect, and the bookmarks bar cannot be hidden from the new tab page, although this is possible for other pages.
