Someone (I think @CAPTAIN America) mentioned Deep Freeze but my quick search of MT found newest posts were in 2017. Meanwhile, I think I read Shadow Defender was more or less dead (or no longer being updated -- correct me if I'm wrong) but Deep Freeze seems to have an active website and standard and enterprise versions. I could see a use for it on at least one of my computers, but would like to know more about it from MT user(s).

Deep Freeze is indeed still active and regularly updated. It's a great tool for maintaining system integrity, as it restores your system to a predetermined state with each reboot. This makes it useful for public computers or ones prone to user error. However, it's not a replacement for traditional security software. Shadow Defender, on the other hand, hasn't seen updates in a while. Always remember, these tools are best used in conjunction with a comprehensive security setup.

@Bot so wondering... I am running win10 due to hardware restriction, but thinking win10 might be sufficiently safe after its EOL with Deep Freeze keeping it intact??

While Deep Freeze can help maintain system integrity, it's not a substitute for regular security updates provided by an OS. After Windows 10 reaches its EOL, it will no longer receive security updates, making it more vulnerable over time. Deep Freeze can't protect you from new threats that emerge after the EOL. It's always recommended to use an OS that is still receiving regular security updates.

If you're thinking about using Deep Freeze on an outdated OS, remember that while it can revert any changes made during a session, it won't protect against new security threats that emerge after the OS's EOL. It's best to use an up-to-date OS for optimal security.

How about Rollback RX?

Solid and stable product, a product i trust more then SD. It is not as versatile as SD since you have to do the same actions but in a more non-practical way.
And of course it will protect your whole system.

I bought a license by mistake recently that i want to sell, Pm if you are interested. Receipt and other legal documentation included.

well I've heard of Rollback RX, but not familiar with it. I very vaguely recall trying Rollback RX a LONG time ago, and not continuing with it. I have used Shadow Defender more recently. I will probably give Deep Freeze a try in the quiet week between Christmas and New Year's as I think it has a 30d free trial, and there's also a cloud version. But did not see anything specific about DF pricing.

I think what bot meant to say is that after EOL without security updates, you may be subject to attacks that work immediately within a session, before you reboot. The longer that you stay within the session, the more time the attacker has to steal info, like browser cookies, and other data (infostealers) . And you only regain secure state after you reboot.

thanks, well-said. I don't really go online from my hardware win10, but I suspect I will pay MS for extended win10 updates if offered. I'm really preferring linux_VM lately and better than 50/50 chance I'll wipe win10 off the hardware and run linux, install VMware, and run a "legacy" win10_VM.

Deep Freeze is wonderful application for uninterrupted computing. It's useful for office setup and server setup.
I have used SD, but updating AV seemed "problematic" IIRC -- I've been known to run computer for a month before rebooting. I looked at DF brochure and it did not really explain the day to usage. I can see situation where you want to reboot to revert to clean version but then you're also "losing" some valid updates that occurred. Thinking practical usage. I could see many more updates and reboots happening using DF or they have work-a-rounds for this.

Use Hasleo Backup instead. Its Delta Restore is speedy and reliable and a fitting alternative to Shadow Defender or Rollback Rx. It can complete a restore on my SSD laptop in under a minute. Shadow Defender is a discontinued product, and Rollback Rx-like software changes the MBR, which is less reliable and riskier with modern Windows 11 and 10 operating systems.

Likewise: After the demise of Shadow I rely more on daily C:\ images which take 15 seconds to make & a little longer to restore but totally reliable, not much to choose now between Hasleo & Macrium Reflect.
