FAQ: /e/ product description - a pro-privacy Android ROM and online services

What’s in /e/?
/e/ is an a mobile ecosystem (ROM + onlines services) that:
  • is open source
  • is pro-privacy
  • is compatible with most existing Android applications
  • cares about usability
  • already exists!
It’s the alternative to the Apple/Google duopoly on the smartphone.

It consists of:
  • an installable mobile operating system for smartphones, which is forked from Android and strongly “ungoogled”
  • a set of sorted and improved default open source applications
  • various online services that are linked to the mobile operating system, such as: a meta search engine for the web, drive (with synchronization), mail, calendar, notes, tasks.

At the core, the operating system
/e/ is an “unGoogled” version of Android OS.
It has an Android OS core, truly open source, with no Google apps or Google services accessing your personal data. It is compatible with all your favourite Android apps.

Learn about apps privacy
In a blink of an eye, /e/ can decipher the app code for you: you can see which and how many trackers are in the app. It also documents the amounts of permissions the app requires to operate. With an easy to read scoring, you can see which apps are safe and which ones should be avoided.

One account for your privacy
Your @e.email account is at the center of the ecosystem, allowing to store, back up and retrieve your data safely on remote servers. For advanced users, we will also offer options to self host.
The @e.email account comes with 5GB of default storage. You need more capacity? Don’t worry, we have several plans available from 64GB to 1TB.

Please not.
/e/ is a already deadly base (using old LineageOS code)

Also they use unknown apps and don't want make the source of that apps public. Most apps they're included are forks of random apps, instead of use the original - why? Don't make sense or if they..

A lot of bad information exist about /e/
More then enough that everyone should avoid it.

And it's not a "pro-privacy" Android if it use microG. This is just marketing and misinformation.

Also "At the moment, two versions are supported: Android Nougat and Android Oreo. Android Pie will be supported in a near future." is only laughable.
Android 10 exist since October last year and still they use so old code.

Update: Fairphone and /e/ team up to build open source, sustainable smartphone
Fairphone and e Foundation are teaming up and taking the rare step of selling a non-Google Android phone to the public. The Fairphone 3, a midrange smartphone originally released in September 2019, can now come pre-loaded with the /e/ OS, a fork of Android that replaces the usual suite of Google apps and services with open source options and /e/'s cloud services. The goal of the two companies is to produce a "privacy conscious and sustainable phone." (It's "/e/ OS" but, for some reason, only "e Foundation.")
