The truth is the complete opposite. I have been dealing with malware since Windows 95 and still run a business today. Although they are more malware samples in the wild today, they are far less malicious than the malware from 2002. The majority of malware today are just simple rogue security products, ransomware, fake alerts, etc. that can easily be avoided. The majority of these have to be manually downloaded and executed by the user in order to be effective.
Malware of 2002 to about 2006 could execute within your web browser or other applications without the user having to do anything. They were much harder to remove and cause much more damage to a system.
Common security knowledge couldn't always protect you against these threats.
With advanced technology in today's browsers and web applications, we no longer have these type of malware. Common security knowledge and a good AV will in most part protect you against today's threats.
Most of today's threat come from fake alert websites that trick users into manually downloading and executing the malware since most other methods of infecting are blocked by web browsers, web applications and basic AV protection. Other popular infection methods are bundled software that can be avoided by some simply checking before running the installer.
Most destructive malware no longer targets home systems like it did back in the days of 2002 to about 2006.
Enjoy!!
