Version 19.5

Released June 2024

New features
  • Device Protection
    • "Viruses & Threats" has been renamed to "Device Protection" and the layout has changed, but the functionality is still the same.
    • Scheduled scanning has been changed to say "Monthly" instead of "Every 4 weeks" and it now runs on the first instance of the selected day in the month. This also fixes an issue where scheduled scans were run too often.
  • Secure Browsing
    • Trusted Shopping and Ad blocker settings can be changed for each Windows user account. This means that you do not need administrative rights to change these settings.
    • iframes with harmful source content are blocked (extension version 5.6.0 and newer).
Removed features
  • Windows 8.1 is no longer supported
    • As of version 19.5, the app cannot be installed on Windows 8.1, and versions 19.4 and older stop receiving upgrades on Windows 8.1.
    • Microsoft stopped supporting Windows 8.1 on January 10th, 2023.

The F-Secure 19.5 update introduces new features like revamped "Device Protection", changes in scheduled scanning, and individual user settings for Trusted Shopping and Ad blocker. It also blocks iframes with harmful content. However, it discontinues support for Windows 8.1.

Good news!
But, I have a question. How is F-Secure's VPN now? Has it improved, faster speed? Is it suitable for online gaming?

After reading some (okay, a lot) of the threads regarding the VPN Freedome app, I'd say don't count on it in the Total version. I haven't run any speed test yet of 19.5, and I'm not a gamer, so I can't help you there. Face value, it doesn't look like to much changed regarding it. For normal web use, it is fine, just not very user friendly as far as options, system tray icon ability etc. like Freedome had. I wouldn't buy Total for their VPN.

The Protection overview window got a nice face lift, I like it :)

I also really like the new GUI. It is very nice and clean.
And thank you for your answer. :)

Interesting post.

Hi,
after updating 19.5 the main screen of f-secure is a black man drinking coffee. Before that there was a dog with a white man, now they are at "device protection". Please don't change this. F-Secure is a Finnish company, not an American one, so we don't need here the "black lives matter" ideology. It is a security program protecting us from viruses, not an ideology company protecting us from the white supremacy.

I had replied with a follow up post of, "Wow... " along with this image. My post was taken down, but not the bigoted thread post?

It still bothered me enough that there is no stand alone VPN system tray icon, or at least the ability to enable and disable it from the F-Secure icon. They seem to be unresponsive to that option on the forum. In using Mullvad, another little annoyance was also resolved for me:

I see that they use amazon nowadays, wich bothers me too. It seems people have actually left f-secure because of amazon. It would be better if they had standalone vpn icon indeed, i have to manually check sometimes to verify that VPN is actually on. Otherwise i cant complain

Why is Amazon a problem? Is the data at Amazon less secure than at any other company? VPN companies based in Panama or a small Caribbean island are not more trustworthy in my opinion.
Because, it's not what I bought F-Secure for. Also, that it was never announced their partnership with Amazon, but was discovered by accident and their refusal to let us know how it benefits us, to explain it better than a post from 2 months ago, is a bit off putting for me. As well as maybe the almost 4,000 views that thread has gotten and still without a better response? And that the only way to not be connected with Amazon servers in any way (if that bothers anyone or not) is to totally uninstall F-Secure. Again, F-Secure Mods, employees, just explain it to us. This is where Bitdefender, as well as Kaspersky support shines, employees will actually answer threads of these types of concerns.

They may as well just announce their products as being F-SecureAWS Internet Security, and F-SecureAWS Total ;) :)

I can't help but get the impression that decisions for or against a particular AV software are based to a considerable extent on emotions rather than facts.
This opinion probably won't find much support in this forum. ;)

In general, that can be the case, but in my situation, it was fact based from the member replies and posts that I provided documentation for (as well as above) on their forum and monitoring that forum consistently for about the last year.
Cheers :)

Amazon is the backbone of many companies infrastructure. It is cheap, cheaper than Azure for example, relatively reliable will only get more and more users.
There is no escape from AWS.
Yep, as long as a person now knows going in, that it's a part of an F-Secure purchase, no problem. In my test driving Avira Pro, they use Amazon servers for their VPN.

Just tried using the VPN, first time since last update and no sites will load? Turn it off, sites back instantly.
Read a Windows update broke VPN, but I installed Proton's free VPN and works ok.
