Facebook now recognizes civil unions and domestic partnerships in its status updates.

The option to select "in a civil union" or "in a domestic partnership" has now been added to the end of a list of relationship choices, some of which include "single," "in an open relationship," or "it's complicated".

"This has been a highly requested feature from users," Facebook's Andrew Noyes, manager of public policy communications, told The Huffington Post, which first reported the story. "We want to provide options for people to genuinely and authentically reflect their relationships on Facebook."

Facebook is adding the new options first in the U.S., the U.K., Australia, France and Canada, a Facebook spokesman said in an email. "We are listening to user feedback and will likely roll out more broadly over time."

The change simply adds another dimension to the definitions of relationships on Facebook, the world's largest social network. And, of course, it opens the door for the millions of LGBT couples that want to participate on the site.
