Facebook and Gemalto have partnered up to create a SIM card embedded with Facebook, thus allowing any GSM-phone holder check for updates without the need of a data plan.
"Facebook for SIM" give users on a GSM network the ability to perform basic Facebook app-like functions such as approving friend requests, updating statuses, posting on walls, and replying to messages, without using a data plan or downloading an application.
All of the text information is transmitted via SMS; because of the limitations of the technology, don't expect to find any fancy photo slideshows or games here.
"Gemalto has developed a creative solution in Facebook for SIM that enables people without mobile data plans to stay connected to their friends on Facebook in an affordable way," said Henri Moissinac, head of mobile business at Facebook, in a statement.
The SIM card requires a paid subscription to use, although Gemalto is granting a free trial period.
