Just hoping there is another method or something else I can try before doing a complete system reinstall. I cannot access the internet to do the OTL or aswMBR logs and then paste them here.

Hi and welcome to the malwaretips.com forums!

I'm Kuttus and I am going to try to assist you with your problem. Please take note of the below:
  • I will start working on your malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine!
  • The process is not instant. Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine is clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Refrain from running self fixes as this will hinder the malware removal process.
  • It may prove beneficial if you print of the following instructions or save them to notepad as I post them.
Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.

Before we start:
Please be aware that removing malware is a potentially hazardous undertaking. I will take care not to knowingly suggest courses of action that might damage your computer. However it is impossible for me to foresee all interactions that may happen between the software on your computer and those we'll use to clear you of infection, and I cannot guarantee the safety of your system. It is possible that we might encounter situations where the only recourse is to re-format and re-install your operating system, or to necessitate you taking your computer to a repair shop.

Because of this, I advise you to backup any personal files and folders before you start.

So you are able to start the computer in Normal mode now right? If you are able to start the computer in Normal mode or in any user account on the computer follow the steps bellow.

You should be able to run both scans while in Normal mode...
STEP 1: Run a scan with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware in Chamelon mode

Download <>Malwarebytes Chameleon from here </>and extract it to a folder in a convenient location

Make certain that your PC is connected to the internet and then open the folder where you extracted Chameleon to and double-click on the Chameleon help file and then follow the onscreen instructions to use it.

If the Chameleon help file itself will not open, then double-click each file one by one until you find one that works, which will be indicated by a black DOS/command prompt window <>Note:</> Do not attempt to open <>mbam-killer</> as that is not a Chameleon executable and serves a different purpose)

Follow the onscreen instructions to press a key to continue and Chameleon will proceed to download and install Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for yo

Once it has done this, it will attempt to update Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, click <>OK</> when it says that the database was updated successful

Next, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware will automatically open and perform a Quick scan

Upon completion of the scan, if anything has been detected, click on <>Show Result</>

Have Malwarebytes Anti-Malware remove any threats that are detected and click <>Yes</> if prompted to reboot your computer to allow the removal process to complete

After your computer restarts, open <>Malwarebytes Anti-Malware</> and perform a Full System scan to verify that there are no remaining threats

Please add both logs in your next reply.

What's next?

Add the following logs to your next post (You can find here details on how to use the Attachment System):
1. MalwareBytes Log
2. Let me know if you had any problems with the above instructions and also <>let me know how things are running now!</>

I can start the PC in normal mode, but I cannot access the internet and usually the FBI Virus pops back up preventing me from doing anything. I am using a different laptop to access this forum and type these messages.

Okay. Please check if you are able to access SafeMode with Command Prompt....... If that one also not working we can try some Bootable Fix Tools.......

No. None of the safe modes will work. I get a blue screen that tells me to check for viruses on the computer, among other text. At the end it lists "Technical information : *** STOP: 0x0000007B (0xF78AA524, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

If you can't boot, we are going to be using a Windows Recovery Environment to help disinfect the system so it may boot again. You will need access to another computer and a CD to perform the following. If you rather use an USB for this, please follow the instructions here

If you choose to use a CD,

Download the OTLPE Standard REATOGO Windows Recovery Environment.
  • Place a blank CD-R disc in to your CD burning drive.
  • Download OTLPEStd.exe and double-click on it to burn to a CD using ISO Burner.
  • Reboot your system using the boot CD you just created.

Note : If you do not know how to set your computer to boot from CD follow the steps here
  • Your system should now display a REATOGO-X-PE desktop.
  • Double-click on the OTLPE icon.
  • When asked "Do you wish to load the remote registry", select Yes
  • When asked "Do you wish to load remote user profile(s) for scanning", select Yes
  • Ensure the box "Automatically Load All Remaining Users" is checked and press OK
  • OTL should now start. Change the following settings
    • Change Drivers to Non-Microsoft
    • Press Run Scan to start the scan.
    • When finished, the file will be saved in drive C:\_OTL\MovedFiles
    • Copy this file to your USB drive if you do not have internet connection on this system
    • Please post the contents of the OTL.txt file in your reply.

Hi,

Download the Following Tools and Save the Tools into a Flash Drive...
1. OTL by OldTimer
2. Malwarebytes Chameleon and extract it to a folder inside the Flash Drive.

  • Reboot your system using the boot CD you created before.
  • Wait for the CD to detect your hardware and load the operating system.
  • Your system should now display a Reatogo desktop
  • Insert the Flash Drive after you see the Reatogo desktop.
  • Now you need to start scan your computer using OTL and Malwarebytes Chameleon.

How to Run a scan with OTL by OldTimer

Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.

When the window appears, <>underneath Output</> at the top change it to <>Minimal Output</>.

Check the boxes beside <>LOP Check</> and <>Purity Check</>.

Click the<> Run Scan</> button.

When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. <>OTL.Txt</> and <>Extras.Txt</>. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
<>Please post this 2 logs in your first reply.</>.

Note: If OTL.exe will not run, it may be blocked by malware. Try these alternate versions: OTL.scr, or OTL.com.

How to Run a scan with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware in Chamelon mode

1. OTL Log
2. Malwarebytes Anti-Malware log
3. Let me know if you had any problems with the above instructions and also <>let me know how things are running now!</>

Sorry, here is more accurate detail. None of the 12 Malwarebyte Chameleon files would get me to the DOS window so that the software could run. All were blocked and I got an Internet Explorer - Security Warning due to an Unknown Publisher. "The file was blocked because it does not have a valid digital signature that verifies its publisher." I assume the virus is blocking them.

We can try Norton Bootable Recovery Tool this time since the above steps not working...

Stage -1
  • Download Norton Bootable Recovery Tool from this link.
  • Save the Norton Bootable Recovery Tool on your computer Desktop.
  • After completing the Download Open the File that you saved on the Desktop. It will start the Norton Download Manager as shown below.

    http://123pcworld.com/MalwareTips/DownloadManager.PNG
  • When the download finishes, the Norton Bootable Recovery Tool Wizard starts automatically.
  • In the Norton Bootable Recovery Tool Wizard, click Agree & Install to accept the User License Agreement.

If you want to change the default install location, click Install Options, and then click Browse to locate the new install location.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions to create the Norton Bootable Recovery Tool on a CD/DVD media or USB key.

    http://123pcworld.com/MalwareTips/NBRT.PNG
  • It will by Default Select your CD/DVD Writer , if it is not select your CD/DVD Writer and click on Next...

    http://123pcworld.com/MalwareTips/NBRT-2.PNG
  • Now you have to Insert a Blank CD/DVD into your CD/DVD Writer and press on Ok. It will take some time to complete the Bootable Recovery Drive Creation.

    http://123pcworld.com/MalwareTips/NBRT-3.PNG

Stage -2
  • Insert the recovery media in the infected computer and start your computer from the recovery media. The recovery media can be a Norton Bootable Recovery Tool CD, DVD, USB key.
Note : If you do not know how to set your computer to boot from CD follow the steps here
  • Read the License Agreement, type your product key, and then click I Agree. (I will send you product key in PM )
  • In the Norton Bootable Recovery Tool window, click Norton Advanced Recovery Scan.
  • Click Start Scan.
  • When the scan finishes, remove the recovery media from the drive or USB port, and restart your computer.

Now try to login to the computer in Normal mode...

Norton found 4 trojan viruses and fixed them. When the computer rebooted in normal mode the FBI virus popped up almost immediately. We ran the Norton scan one addition time. It found no infections or viruses this time. I will try to run the OTL scan you asked for next.

Downloaded OTL as instructed through Google Chrome. Tried to run within the REATOGO boot environment and got same error as last time we tried it:

Otl: OTL.exe - Unable to Locate Component. This application has failed to start because framedyn.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem.

Lets create a bootable HitmanPro rescue disk and run a scan:
STEP 1: Create a HitmanPro.Kickstart USB flash drive

While you are using a "clean" (non-infected) computer, <>download HitmanPro</> from the below link.
<>HITMANPRO DOWNLOAD LINK</> (This link will open a download page in a new window from where you can download HitmanPro)

Insert your USB flash drive into your computer and then follow the instructions from the below video:

STEP 2: Remove infection with HitmanPro.Kickstart

After you have create the HitmanPro.Kickstart USB flash drive, you can <>insert this USB drive into the infected machine</> and start your computer

Once the computer starts <>repeatedly tap the F11 key </>(on some machines its F10 or F2),which should bring up the Boot Menu, from there you can select to boot from your USB.
Next, you'll need to <>perform a system scan with HitmanPro</> as see in the below video:

I had tried running Hitman Pro off the USB boot before and it would not run. This time it worked and it found the ransomware. The machine has rebooted and so far no FBI virus has appeared. The only issue I do continue to get whenever starting the computer, and this was happening the week before the FBI virus showed up, is the following error message.

RUNDLL Error loading C:\Documents and Settings\Maggie Haas\Application Data\wbspn.dll The specified module could not be found.

Any idea how to fix this issue so it doesn't come up every time the computer is started?
