Released: Firefox 53.0

Changelog:
---------------------

New:
  • Improved graphics stability for Windows users with the addition of compositor process separation (Quantum Compositor)
  • Two new 'compact' themes available in Firefox, dark and light, based on the Firefox Developer Edition theme
  • Lightweight themes are now applied in private browsing windows
  • Reader Mode now displays estimated reading time for the page
Changed:
  • Updated the design of site permission requests to make them harder to miss and easier to understand
  • 32-bit Mac OS X is no longer supported. 32-bit Mac OS X users can switch to Firefox ESR 52 to continue receiving security updates.
  • Updates for Mac OS X are smaller in size compared to updates for Firefox 52
  • Media playback on new tabs is blocked until the tab is visible
  • New visual design for audio and video controls
  • The last few characters of shortened tab titles fade out instead of being replaced by ellipses to keep more of the title visible
  • Media playback on new tabs is blocked until the tab is visible
Developer:
  • Support for WebM video with alpha, which allows playing videos with transparent backgrounds
  • More details on changes for web developers at Firefox 53 for developers

Since version 53, support for Windowa XP and Vista has been dropped, and Mozilla will no longer be providing 32-bit DMG images to macOS. On Linux, Firefox 53 will not run on older Intel Pentium 4 and AMD Opteron processors.

HI

Can someone confirm whether he can enter Private Browsing using v53? I'm using the portable v53 but cannot see the purple mask on the top right hand after setting and entering Private Browsing.

Thanks

Hello @HarborFront ,
I'm using a portable version of FF53 (upgraded from v52 last minute) and the purple mask is showing in private browsing.
Private Browsing is active on a new window.

Yes, I'm able to get that too.

What I meant was you set FF such that it ALWAYS starts in Private Browsing and then check. The purple mask is not there

You follow the steps here to set FF ALWAYS in Private Browsing by default

How To Start Firefox in Private Mode by Default

Opera and Chromium can ALWAYS start in Private/Incognito Mode which you can see that

Thanks

Oh yes, I've just tried (I've never used that before) and I agree: FF53 portable doesn't start in Private Browsing with this settings.

I've observed some previous version of Firefox way back before where Private Browsing is activated but does not shown the proper color and icon.

For sure that caused some concerns from some avid private browsing users. ;)

Here's also the explanation why NO purple mask when selecting Private Browsing by default

I can find the Tracking Protection is turned ON on the left side of the toolbar too

So Private Browsing is being turned on by default :D

@HarborFront : Yes I saw that, the color still corresponds to the private browsing however just a minor confusion for some users.

But AFAIK, it suppose to show the primary notice once a user activate private browsing mode.

Glad to hear it.

Apple seems like the only company pushing the shift to 64-bit only.

I'm on the FF beta channel, so I have been on 53 for a bit now, and
to be honest, yeah it seems a little faster. The look for me took some
getting used to, but that is purely cosmetic. In all, I like the direction,
and whats to come. Great job Mozilla :)

Might be due to that Servo part (Quantum Compositor).

PS i am on default theme.

If your on the beta, it now comes with 3 or 4 pre-installed themes.
The darker one is real nice, I am not too fond of the others.

The Compact Dark is all me ;)
PS: the 3 with the "Red" arrows are the themes that are pre-packaged with the beta.

Hi

Anyone using this Priv8 add-on to sandbox the tabs in FF? With this do you still require Private Browsing to be turned on?

Priv8

Thanks

Firefox seems to be running a little edgy for me, compared to the previous version. Moments of hanging, moments of stupidity. Anyone else face this issue?
