I got a key shortly after the promo started. Some of my friends thought that they can get a key and then wait for an opportunity to use it later on .

Also, there was a window of opportunity to activate Windows 8 with the MCP key due to loophole in the activation process, which has since been fixed.

Using a Microsoft account can speed the process of receiving a key significantly.

Its an old news. Actually there was an activation flaw which now MS has fixed which allowed people to activate windows using the media center key.

Even if you miss this opportunity, I wouldn't worry too much of it.
