FREE Zotero

Your personal research assistant
Zotero is a free, easy-to-use tool to help you
collect, organize, annotate, cite, and share research.

Zotero is a legitimate, widely used reference manager, and it can be a good choice if you want a local library of papers plus one-click citations in Word/LibreOffice/Google Docs.

What Zotero does (practical view)
  • Captures citations/PDFs from your browser (via the Zotero Connector)
  • Organizes items into collections/tags, supports notes and annotations
  • Generates citations/bibliographies in many styles
  • Optionally syncs your library across devices (metadata is free; file storage depends on your setup/plan)

Security / safety tips (recommended on MalwareTips)
  • Download only from the official site: Zotero | Your personal research assistant
  • Be cautious with “Zotero download” ads and third-party download portals (common malware distribution route).
  • After downloading, verify the installer’s digital signature (Windows: right-click installer -> Properties -> Digital Signatures) and scan the file with your AV and/or VirusTotal.
  • If you use syncing: treat your Zotero account like any other cloud account (unique password + 2FA if available, and keep recovery options updated).
  • If you store sensitive PDFs/notes: consider encrypting the local device (BitLocker/FileVault) and be mindful of what gets synced/shared with groups.

Next step
Get Zotero and the official browser connector from the Zotero site, then scan the installer before running it and keep it updated like any other internet-facing app.
