Before the older version of Gdata around 3-4 years before, one of the engine used was Kaspersky.

There are lot of possible engines which they could guide from other security applications like Avira, ESET, F-secure and etc...

For the incoming 2014 version, yes. They discarded Avast Engine, maybe the detection rate is not high enough or the expenses is too high...
