I take it you are using McAfee 2013.

An ok choice but not something I would recommend at this stage. If it was a product part of a deal you got, then fine. If you are the one paying, you could go for a free alternative or even a paid one:

Avast Free + Windows 7 firewall or with TinyWall
AVG 2013 Free + Windows 7 firewall or with TinyWall
Avira Free + Windows 7 firewall or with TinyWall
Comodo Internet Security (full suite) or CAV with Defense Plus + Windows 7 firewall or with TinyWall

Emsisoft Antimalware (paid but MT has a good deal for it) + Windows 7 firewall or with TinyWall

What extensions you have for Chrome?

Also you could look into a backup solution like Macrium Reflect or Paragon backup and recovery or EaseUS. All 3 have free versions which are enough.

Great security.
1- Install Ad Block Plus for google chrome.
2- Install sandboxie or bufferzone pro and use it do browse the web if you use some other browser than chrome. If you use chrome all the time then no worries as chrome has a sandbox.
3- For backup use Paragon or the default Windows backup should suffice.
4- I have reviewed system mechanic and you are beginer. So please be careful with the issues it shows. It is too agressive. I would recommend you to use Slim Cleaner http://slimcleaner.com/ or CC cleaner.

For real-time protection I would recommend you uninstall McAfee because it takes up a lot of system resources and low detection. I would replace it with AVG Free, Avast Free, Avira Free, or ESET (paid)
If you want an extra layer of real-time protection then I would recommend Kingsoft Antivirus (free), or MalwareBytes AntiMalware (paid for real-time)
On demand scanners I would recommend HitMan Pro (paid after 30-day removal trial expires) or Emsisoft Anti-Malware (or Emergency Kit)
For Google Chrome browser extensions I would recommend WOT, adblock, and bitdefender trafficlight.

System Mechanic is made iolo software.
System Mechanic isn't harmful unless (based off malbky) is too aggressive for a beginner (average) user and may harm your system if used incorrectly that is why he is recommend SlimCleaner or CCleaner.

System Mechanic is ok if the user knows exactly what to do with it. I however rather use CCleaner mainly.

SlimCleaner I tried it but didn't see much difference to change it over.

Will probably give another try in future.

MalwareVirus the site for which i reviewed sys mech is no more. I will upload the review to my forum. The point is System mechanic shows a plethora of errors. Soemtimes user may get confused. Its agressive.
I feel not much harm in mcafee. It has decent detection and on most systems it slows down the pc. There are few PCs it works fine.
Garbear if Mcafee works for you then dont change it. If any probs then you have the plethora of options given to you.
Personally if your a beginer and have the bucks consider a paid suite.
Else go with AVG 2013+ Windows Firewall with Tinywall or Win7 Firewall Control(paid).
Also use BufferZone Pro and keep all softwares up to date using Secunia Psi.

I disagree, default McAfee settings are not optimal, and not fit for general public / consumer use.
I'd advise to get rid of McAfee, once your malware-issue has been sorted.

I agree with Earth it's the best adviced in a long run.
It's really bad that i see so often people giving the wrong advised.

Forgotten to add this.

Removed that System Mechanic if you want your drive to stay healthy.
If you hear grinding sound from your drive, System Mechanic is the caused of this.

Onced MCafee is removed it will leaved tons of junk
Use Wise Care 365 or CCleaner to remove junk left by MCafee.

If you can't afford a paid security software, there some good freeware around.
There is also free promotion and giveaways if you're lucky.

Happy hunting

Noises from harddrive and system mechanic? Dont get the connection. See personally if you are a safe surfer McAfee is not something so bad or crap. For some poeple it works so let it i said. If its wrong advise then I am sorry but I have seen many consumers using MCafee in India and are safe. McAfee is very common here.
