The German Ministry of Justice has launched fine proceedings against Twitter for allegedly failing to deal with complaints about illegal content in a timely manner. German Justice Minister Marco Buschmann announced this today via Twitter and its own website.

"The ministry has sufficient evidence that Twitter violated its legal obligation to handle complaints about illegal content. The Internet is not a legal vacuum. Platforms should not simply accept it when their services are misused to distribute criminal content," Buschmann stated. According to the complaint, Twitter did not block or remove allegedly illegal content within the legal deadlines.

This would not involve exceptions, but "systematic failure of complaint management." Twitter has now been given the opportunity to respond to the allegations. Ultimately, the court will determine whether there is indeed illegal content, after which the ministry may fine Twitter.

This is likely going to be an unpopular opinion but I’ll voice it all the same.

This is partially Twitter’s fault for opening themselves up to something like this. Under the old leadership, they had been saying for years “We’re not an American company, we’re a global company” and now the globe wants to enact its punishments on them because it thinks it has a claim on them. Had they stuck to the normal setup (or at least it used to be) for social media sites “We’ll accept anything from a US court, but all foreign requests are thrown in the bin,” they would have had a lot less headache. If someone wanted to get something done, they’d have to come to the US and file it. Now Twitter has lost that leverage, and has to appease everyone or lose face.

And good for them. Twitter has been a cesspool for years, even with Musk running it. I say fine ‘em into closure. And they can take Meta (and subsidiaries), Snapchat, and TikTok with them. You will watch mental illness, depression, and other issues diminish worldwide, overnight.

Germany should just ban Twitter because the Internet is a legal vacuum.
