What you need to know

  • Gmail is adding the ability to react to emails with emojis.
  • The reactions are primarily for Gmail users, with users of other email providers getting a limited experience.
  • Reactions are turned off by default and can be restricted by Google Workspace administrators in school or work settings.

Google is rolling out the ability to react to emails with emojis in Gmail, it announced in a Workspace Blog post. The feature addition will make sending and replying to an email more like interacting with a chat on a typical messaging platform, like Google Chat or Slack. These emoji reactions will be visible to everyone on the email chain, and could reduce the need for replying to mass emails to confirm receipt. The company says that email reactions in Gmail can help users "quickly respond, acknowledge receipt of an email, and express themselves more authentically."

This is an interesting update from Gmail. It seems like they're trying to make email communication more interactive and expressive, similar to chat platforms. However, the fact that this feature is turned off by default and can be restricted in certain settings might limit its usage.

I recently discovered a useful feature in Gmail that enables users to determine the fate of their account after their passing. Essentially, you can set a period of inactivity (ranging from 12 to 18 months), after which Gmail will try to reach you through all your recovery options (such as phone and alternate email addresses). If these attempts are unsuccessful, it will proceed to share your account information with the designated individual. Additionally, you can specify what information you wish to share and what to delete, including emails, documents, and files stored in Google Drive. You can also leave a final message via either text, voice of video that will be shared along with the account. I for one have added the white house directory to my recipient list.
