More than four-fifths of the world's top media organisations, including the Guardian, have been the target of likely state sponsored hacking attacks, according to research from two Google security engineers.

Presented at the ongoing Black Hat Asia 2014 conference in Singapore, Shane Huntley and Morgan Marquis-Boire's research shows that journalists are "massively over-represented" among the targets of state-sponsored hackers.

While the pair didn't go into detail about their methodology, they confirmed to Reuters that Google "tracks the state actors that attack our users".

Those who the company suspects have been the target of such attacks are notified by a banner across the top of their webmail login, such as this displayed to Guardian staffers since mid-March:

Yes, I posted similar news on the 'Journalists, media under attack from hackers: Google researchers' .. - you have the better title!
So majority, large majority of hacker attacks has from various Governments .. Electronic Warfare - EW - in plain boom!
China, India, Russia, Arab states, Israel, USA too ..
.. not me.
.. better this than bombarding the innocent people

But would be better to channel this energy to create to make good, not to do EW.

'As you can see, Russian and Ukrainian criminals are overwhelmingly responsible for the distribution of malware at The Planet'

Hi
I work for Incapsula.
We only shown top 5 in infographic but we have a "top 10 list" in the report itself.
(see it here: http://www.incapsula.com/images/blog/images/2013-14_ddos_threat_landscape.pdf)

In the report Russia was #8 with 3.45%, Ukrain wasn't in top ten, but the list if for origin of DDoS attacks, not malware, and we might be talking about somewhat different resources.

Having said that, there should be no logical correlation between the hacker's location and the geo-location of his/hers resources.
For example, I wouldn't be surprised (at all) to learn about a Russian hacker using compromised Indian servers to attack US based website.
