Google said Thursday that it is enhancing its social search algorithm to more frequently include results from social connections.
The new social search is only available if a user searches while signed in to his or her Google account. The new changes will roll out first on Google.com in English, and they will appear in the coming week, Google said.
In Oct. 2009, Google began indexing links and social connections as part of its Labs program. In January 2010, Google made Social Search available to all of its users, adding Buzz a few months later.
Now, Google said it will give more weight to socially-connected search results, "enabling you to get even more information from the people that matter to you, whether they're publishing on YouTube, Flickr or their own blog or website," Google said in a blog post authored by Mike Cassidy, Google's product management director, and Matthew Kulick, a product manager. According to Google, relevance isn't just about factual weight, but about relationships.
