Why can't they just leave them without internet -> they would ask someone and that person would tell them they failed.

Remember that thousands of computers have been compromised. What google is doing is right. Most users are ignorant that infected machines won't be able to connect to the internet after the announced date and this could be very important from the user's point of view.

If using Chrome, Google should silently download it as part of a Chrome update and fix it. :D

I think Google wouldn't want to face the media crapstorm that would follow after changing a users DNS settings without telling them about it. Even if it was for their own good... :s

Well likely they do it a similar pattern before to notify users that were infected on redirection.

This purpose of step to know and users must aware that one of their computers were surfing and its compromised already.

So its really a matter of good move.
