Serious Discussion Has anyone done rigorous testing on anti-malware DNS services (Quad9, DNS0...)?

No, but various sources indicate that DNS0, QUAD9 are really good hassle free DNS services, with QUAD9 being stationed in Switserland may be having some advantage over a government supported (EU) DNS0 service (EU might censure something is feared by some). On two other good DNS services is also some critique. AdGuard DNS (free) and Next DNS (free) also do very well, but the first is Russian company with HQ in Cyprus and the latter needs an account. Not adding any judgement on this (Russian origin or Next needing an account to work well), but for some this might be an issue (therefore mentioning it).

Yes, I am testing regularly a few fresh malware (exe) links or even others against well-known DNS services, ranking is the following most of time:
  1. DNS0.eu / NextDNS
  2. Quad9
  3. Cloudflare 1.1.1.2
  4. Adguard DNS
Note: I never tried Mullvad DNS but that is on my to-do list for next time ;)

These DNS providers can work hand-in-hand with Safe Browsing (Chrome) and SmartScreen (Edge) found in modern browsers to further boost passive protection.

Highly useful for mobile devices where a Real-time Antivirus isn't an option.

Last time I did a quick test:

10/10 - NextDNS
05/10 - ControlID
04/10 - Cloudflare
02/10 - OpenDNS
00/10 - Quad9
00/10 - CleanBrowsing
00/10 - Adguard
00/10 - DNS0

Cloudflare got a security version since then, it definitively performs better than Quad9. ControlID supposedly updated NRDs and so did Adguard.

@goodjohnjr I have read a lot of test and reviews on free only DNS services.

There is a top3 with two good challengers
1. Quad9
2. NextDNS free WITH account and all security features enabled
3. DNS0.eu
4. at minimal distance Adguard DNS but with better adblocking capabilities
5. at a little distance cloud flare 1.1.1.2 but with fastest resolve times
Thank you for sharing.

In that one video I believe AdGuard DNS & Quad9 blocked more.

I know that these are free: the public AdGuard DNS server, Quad9, and the free CleanBrowsing DNS server, and some Cloudflare DNS servers.

I have never used dns0.eu before, but allegedly it is free.

NextDNS has a limited free version & paid versions, I have only briefly tried it once.

100% free to use is only DNS0 The European public DNS that makes your Internet safer.
NextDNS has also the unlimited paid subscription

Well, that depends always how fresh/new are the malicious-links, after 12 hours later, Cloudflare 1.1.1.2 usually also block them.

In general, DNS0(NextDNS) and Quad9 are stronger in terms of protection due to "features" what you can read about on their homepage(s)...
