Hi everyone!

I have been on this forum for quite a while, however I have only really started to be active recently. My name is Matthew but my nickname is Simmy hence why that is my name on here. I live in the North-East of the UK in a nice little town called South Shields, next to the notorious hometown of Sunderland Football Club  haha. I am a student studying ICT at college, and hopefully this year I would like to study Computer Science at Newcastle University.

Also, I am an AVG VIP/Hall of Famer, so basically I help to monitor their Facebook page as well as sometimes working with product developers and trying to help improve AVG products overtime (a bit like Avast Evangelists I believe). Anyways, you will probably see me pottering about the AVG section posting things AVG related, however I am not biased towards AVG in any way, I have used Kaspersky, Norton, Avast, Bitdefender and Vipre in the past .

Hello Simmy,

Welcome to MalwareTips :D I have just joined yesterday and I have been always on this site reading stuff and finally decided to join. I am only 15 and my name is Brad. I'm from Canada. I am working on becoming a IT professional when I am done school :)

I don't really like AVG products personally. When I was new to antivirus's they were however my very first antivirus that I chose. Then I got infected and I had to get my PC fixed. When it came back it had avast! installed. Now years later, I don't get viruses at all anymore and if I do I know how to fix them myself. I now use COMODO Internet Security 6, and haven't been happier. I haven't got infected once since I have been using it.

Hi Malware Man! Thanks for the warm welcome, I used to do the same as you. I kept reading the site for ages before deciding to sign up. Is there anything in particular that you did not like about AVG? I always welcome feedback that can be passed onto the developers. :) Glad to hear that you are virus free however!

You are most welcome! I am loving this site. Already up to about 30 posts so far. I love giving opinions on software. And I'm always changing my security to try and find the right one for me.

Here's something I could do. I could switch to AVG for a bit. I can give the new version a go. The last version I have used was 8 I believe. It didn't have rootkit protection or anything and I was using 32 bit Vista. And the virus that I had picked up just happened to be a nasty rootkit that prevented the PC from booting up. At the time I didn't have a clue what was going on since I didn't know much about viruses at all.

Now I am really attached to COMODO. It's just excellent and very light. I remember AVG being very heavy and having about 10 or so processes? If you want I can give it a go by itself or just add COMODO firewall for extra protection. I will give it a honest go for a bit and come back and PM you my results and final thoughts about the new version.

Right now I'm looking for a free antivirus that is better then COMODO. So I can pair it up with it's firewall. Right now I'm waiting for the new avast! to come out. But can give AVG a go until then and who knows I may end up sticking with it if I like it better then avast! :)

It's just my past experiences with AVG wasn't the best and it let a nasty rootkit in. At the time I didn't know anything about viruses so I assumed it protected me against everything when it actually didn't. So maybe I wasn't all that far to AVG.

Sorry for the long post

No problem! :) Yes AVG was heavy and quite poor in the past, however they do seemed to have upped their game since then with version 2013. If you could spare the time to try out AVG 2013 then I would greatly appreciate it. I might be able to sort out a license for you, if you like it so much and if you could tell me any improvements that you feel could be made. :)

AVG did improve indeed with the 2013 version , but still uses a ton of processes and its a heavy drag on your boottime. also it has a tendancy , to miss quite a few zero day malware samples. It has a super page blocker wich detects a huge amount of malicious links. but I think they really have to step up their game in zero day malware detection : add hips , behaviour blocker and sandbox technologies , we have talked this over quite a lot over at the avg fanpage on facebook.

Hello,

Sorry for late reply. I never seen it come up. Still getting used to this site  It's honestly up to you if you want to get me a license. It'd be great if you tried cause then I could give the paid version a honest go. The reviews that I have seen on YouTube don't look good at all. Most say it sucks. And a lot end up making the PC crash due to AVG not doing it's job. This would be my first product that I'd do a review on. I wold actually be delighted to review it. I never done anything like this before. I'm all about trying and testing out new software seeing what works best for me. If you think AVG would appreciate me giving them a honest go then maybe you can work out a license somehow so I can try it out even longer once a month is up ;)

Right now I am using Norton Internet Security 2013, it came with my laptop as a 6 month trial. I am loving it. So light weight and fast. It's just under 12MB, that's amazing! I also noticed that AVG has about 10 or so processes which is a lot...

Things I like & dislike about AVG:
-Memory usage & processes: it needs to use less memory and it has like 10 processes which is pretty crazy.
-Updates: The free version updates once a day. I get that they want to make money but still it should update at least 3 times a day, IMO.
-GUI: Honestly, I like it. I know a lot of reviewers don't like it. But I don't have a problem with it.
-Threats: When things are found it should automatically block them. Not give the ignore or protect me option. It should straight up block it.
-BB: I think it really needs one if it doesn't (not sure if it has it lol)
-HIPS:Every antivirus needs a HIPS.
-Sandbox: They sound look into getting this implemented. It would stop a lot of nasty zero day malware.
-Link Scanner: The link scanner should work in Chrome just as it works in Internet Explorer as a lot of people use Chrome too.
-Scan Speed: I think it's very good. I like how during the first scan it caches stuff to make the next scan go way faster. Great feature.
-ADS: I know there isn't much you can do about these, but they get quite annoying in the free version. I know they want to make a few bucks, but still.
-Zero Day Modules: It really needs more modules the the identity protection. Like mention above it needs a BB, HIPS & sandbox.

That's all I can think about AVG so far. I hope you don't think I'm to picky :lolz: these are just my opinions! :)

Oh how this site brings out the geeky side of me. I feel smart with this stuff. But when it comes to school subjects, not so much.

Thankyou Malware Man! A lot of users have been asking about a sandbox and better zero day protection. I hope that the development team give in and give us one for the 2014 release :p. I have sent off a license key request, I will contact you further via private message. :)
