HI! I live in a retirement village and I help seniors with their computers and printers. Seniors trust everyone and they get infected a lot. I have had very good success so far cleaning their PC's. Here's my method. If it ever fails, then I'll get our malware team involved here on MT.
I first scan with Malwarebytes Root Kit. Then I scan with Adwcleaner. I follow that with Malwarebytes free addition. It's usually pretty clean by then, but I follow that with ESET on line scanner.. On occasions I use Microsoft Safety Scanner. The last scan is with JRT . I have also learned what the bad guys or what I call snake oil programs look like and I remove those. Just generally clean up the computer
I then try to teach the senior how safe surf and not get infected again. I add WOT to there browsers and also add Malwarebytes Anti-Exploit.
I have learned these things from this forum. I visit our malware section every day. @TwinHeadedEagle is my hero and if your here because you think you have been infected, there aren't any better malware fighters than we have here on MT.
These are things I do here in my retirement village. I never charge for my service. That's kind a like MT. MT never charges anyone. These are all scanners that are used here on MT. Sense you're already here, let our malware team get you PC cleaned up and running well again!!
Thank you!!;);)

Hi @Fedora I hear you. I think it runs one a month when Windows up date Tuesday installs up dates.
I still like to run it in between windows up dates.;)

Just saying, Microsoft Safety Scanner is pointless.

What OS have you set up for them?
Hi @Huracan I'm not sure what you're asking?? I see all kinds of Operating Systems here. Even saw a W98.
Mostly W7 and a few W8. One senior has the new WOW for seniors. It's quite a deal and uses a Linux OS.
Very pricey, nearly 1100$$ but I think it's senior proof. Hardly ever see any XP3. I do have one set up in the library but no internet.
They use it for games. I also have a W7 in the library.
Thanks for your reply!!

I think running so many programs is needlessly spending your time. For anti rootkit, just run Kaspersky TDSS killer. Do remember to check the option "verify driver signatures". For the main scan, I would recommend herd protect/HitmanPro and Norton Power eraser. You can choose to run the rep scan of NPE, which can potentially identify very new threats. These programs scan for rootkits too. To remove adwares you can continue with adwcleaner and JRT. To prevent future infections you can continue with what you are doing, but I would much rather use Software Restriction Policies if they simply use their PCs to browse the net. With SRP it is near impossible to get infected.

Hi! Thanks for your reply. Those are good scanners also. There are a ton of good malware scanners and they all Get-er-Done. I'm not familiar with NPE or SRP. Maybe you could explain further. I'm familiar with the others. HitmanPro is not freeware. I'm down on any thing that has a Norton name on it at this moment!! Not familiar with Herd Protect. Seniors like simple and free!!
PS Our malware team is now recommending MBAM Anti Root Kit in place of TDSS Killer. That's why I use it!!;);)

I wondered the same about SRP, until I read back and saw Software Restriction Policy,;) and NPE = Norton Power Eraser.

@donetao , reading about adwcleaner (something I haven't used since first joining) and MBAM Anti Root Kit along with ESET online scanner, helps me appreciate options I hadn't thought of since I've not routinely used them. I just looked up the WOW! Computer, and realize that someone's come up with a lucrative (and very useful) idea with great marketability! Lucky for your friends donetao graciously accepts hugs and cookies!!:)

@illumination 's 'big stick' comment and @Fedora 's catty pictures had me thoroughly *laughing*!:D

Hi friend. Yes WOW seems to be the answer for seniors in the further , but at this time it's very pricy for the majority of seniors.
WOW uses Linux, but I don't know a lot more about it. Yes those cookies and clobbers are starting to show up on this old man's belly.:):)
Your a good man my friend!!
Thanks for your reply!;)
