"Windows and Mac OS X are powerful operating systems. However, sometimes they just doesn’t cut it. Maybe you need to work with a Linux based OS, or maybe you just want to use a simpler OS. Whatever your reason, using multiple operating systems can be a powerful way to compute. A popular way to achieve this, is by setting up a dual-boot system, which gives you the capability to boot to different operating systems. Even so, this method has its drawbacks, primarily when you need to switch between operating systems quickly. What if you could run multiple operating systems in unison? This is exactly the objective of VirtualBox, a free virtualization software created by Oracle. VirtualBox allows you to run almost any OS directly on top of your host OS."

thanks so very much venustus great stuff

i use Vurtualbox and love it you just need a big hard drive and enough memory

it's a great teacher

it's great for learning new things like you can add a second hard drive/cd/dvd drive or more if you like
learn to install not just a Linux OS but Mac,Oracle Solaris,BSD,Windows
learn to dual boot
learn to boot from a iso (same as a boot cd/dvd)
learn to format/partition a hard drive from a boot cd/iso or software
learn to use and test software like imaging tools, security software with out fear of breaking something on your main pc
and much much more

there is also other Linux versions to try that are very small and use less memory to run like
Puppy Linux
Damn Small Linux
and more

you can download a safe copy of Windows 7 to play with here
