I started my journey with computers in the year 1999 with an intel petium 100Mhz desktop. I am a lawyer by profession, but I love technology.I have recently switched to ubuntu gnome 14.04 and soon fell in love with gnome. I now use my win 7 just to play elder scrolls and for some drafting in word ( still not used to libreoffice). For security in linux i have enabled the firewall and installed the front end for the same. I am using only the default PPAs for added security. Clam av is the default inatallation in ubuntu and i have no plan to remove the same. I am thinking of installing conky for some visual effects.

Actually this is a delayed intro, sorry for that.

as you i dual-booted Win8.1 with Kubuntu , now Win8 is just for photoshop/lightroom and office

I didn't get one thing, The official download link - http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop
It is a Gnome ver. or KDE. ????
Here it is http://ubuntugnome.org/download/
the link you have mentioned is ubuntu with unity (unity is a customized desktop environment of gnome/gtk by ubuntu, its more user friendly and makes the transition easier for beginners)
KDE version of ubuntu is known as KUBUNTU and there are other versions like Xbuntu, Lubuntu, Edbuntu,Mythbuntu etc. just search their names and you will get the download links. see their review videos on youtube before making a decision.
steps to install ubuntu.
1. download the correct version of ubuntu. there are 2 versions 32 bit and 64 bit. You can easily use 64 bit version if ur system is not older than 7 years or so.
2.go here and download this http://rufus.akeo.ie/ ( this little application can Create bootable USB drives in just seconds) or just burn the iso to a dvd, but usb way is more faster.
3. have a look here for dual booting tutorial http://www.linuxbsdos.com/?s=dual boot
My partition details:
1./boot 500Mb
2. / 20GB
3./home 25GB
4.SWAP 1GB

I tried Kubuntu, except the KDE plasma interface I Liked everything about it. But I wanted a change from Windows look so I moved to Xubuntu but that was too basic in look, can't be said as an eye candy. So I settled for Gnome for now.
