Greetings..
I have a small Asus transformer laptop/tablet , and I need some advice regarding the security setup..
what I'm interested in is performance , I've tried Bitdefender free (the stable and the new beta) and also gave the new free avast (nitro update) a try , both are very light but not as good in terms of performance as windows defender is for this laptop.
My question is what free security software can I add to cover my self from the threats that windows defender doesn't deal well with ?

winDefender + 1 more app = slower, more battery drain than avast alone
- Voodooshield is a good choice but it is very very likely to have freezing bug in your tablet because you have to put it into sleep mode regualarly -> not recommended for now
- Crystal security = buggy, so many popups, not really recommended for tablet IMHO
- Zemana giveaway = battery drainer confirmed by me, not very powerful in realtime protection as its ondemand scanner- not recommended

My recommendation:
- avast free or business free
+ Disable transient caching -> my reason for slow performance
+ perform a full scan to let it collect caches, you can also config quickscan, enable permanent caching so quickscan can collect caches -> it will become faster after
+ disable scan for rootkit on startup -> depend on you but it will speed up boot time
+ disable some privacy thingies, enable PUP detection
+ something needs to be done to make avast light, if I have a chance I would create a guide then
For me after tweaking, windefender is nowhere near avast in terms of lightness. WD has a slow scanning speed and usually causes high CPU usage which is not good for battery-dependent devices especially tablets. The good thing about WD is that it doesnt cause increase in boot time

Hi, for normal performance of your machine, I don't know the specific. I suggested to try Panda Antivirus Free, or 360. Security with scan engine. Avira are be good but with one anti-exploit. All are free.

Voodooshield (VS) Free in Auto-Pilot Mode. - Install and forget. No need to worry about regular signature update (it's not an AV).

Add EMET 5.5 if you're paranoid of exploit protection.

For free anything will do.

Why not try AVG Free? however the breaker brought is many process will register on task manager and resources many spike up to each other.

Honestly Avast Free is enough to your needs, the Hardening Mode is very capable for blocking any programs where signatures will bypass; so no infections should occur.

Seeing it is limited in resources I would run VS on it my brother. https://voodooshield.com/
CMLew has the right idea ;)

SecureAPlus is free for 1 year, it gives you a very lite cloud AV, and some white listing as an Anti-Exe.

Also Comodo Cloud has had some very favorable video reviews lately. But I think SecureA might be better for you.

Then an outbound Firewall controller to use with Windows 10 Firewall.

so if I'd use VS, I know it's compatible with other AVs , but would I really need to enable windows defender / install avast ? or would an on demand scanner be sufficient from time to time

An on-Demand would be fine if your not participating in risky browsing habits, I would run with either Zemana or HitMan Pro

Avast free with hardened mode - Voodooshield and Some on demand scanners ( zemana anti malware , emsisoft emergency kit ) Will do the trick! Since the nitro update avast is not heavy on the system at all. Do not forget to deselect all the crap during install ( safezone browser - safeprice browser addon - secureline - pc cleaner and so on )

This is what I did on my PC today, seems to be working very nicely:

I decided to go with Comodo Cloud AV, along with ExeRadar Pro, and Windows Firewall Control. This way I could have a lite configuration, and a little bit of all worlds. Cloud AV, a lite sandbox, and outbound firewall control.

@E7_Durden as you said Windows Defender is light on your system.
If you install VoodooShield i suggest to enable WD since it's detection has improved a lot lately.
This would a nice and light security set up and i think it will fulfill your needs;)
