Question for those of you who use Faronics Deep Freeze Standard on a single home computer, NOT in a business situation. Whenever you do a backup of your entire C

rive or a Differential backup using your favorite mirror imaging program, Macrium, Hasleo, Terabyte, Drive Image, whatever, do you Set the Clone Flag or do you just ignore it? Thanks much.

For a single home computer, you must use the SetCloneFlag.exe utility before creating your master backup image if you want the restored image to function correctly. Ignoring this flag often results in the restored OS failing to communicate with the Deep Freeze driver, leading to "License Expired" errors or the inability to "Thaw" the system after restoration.

If you ignore the flag and take a backup while the system is simply "Thawed," the restored image may retain metadata that flags the system as "Frozen" incorrectly, or it may trigger a tamper-protection lockout because the "Hardware ID" of the backup doesn't match the "Hardware ID" the driver expects post-restore.

If you are preparing to run a backup today, follow this sequence:

Thaw the Machine
Ensure Deep Freeze is in a "Thawed" state.

Run the Utility
Locate SetCloneFlag.exe (usually found in the Faronics installation folder or available via their support portal).

Execute
Run the tool. You will see a confirmation that the flag has been set.

Do Not Reboot
Perform your backup/image (Macrium, Hasleo, etc.) immediately after setting the flag without restarting the Windows environment.

Post-Backup
Once the image is saved, you can resume normal operations.

Thanks a bunch, Divergent. I assume that the same is true with performing a Differential backup, I MUST set the Clone Flag?
Acadia
Yes, it applies to differential backups as well. When using Deep Freeze, any sector-level backup, whether it is Full, Differential, or Incremental, requires the Clone Flag to be set if the system is currently Thawed.

Hmmmm, now here is a question for you. What is a person does all their backing up and recovery from a usb key and NOT while in Windows?
I really appreciate your answers.

Never mind. Did some research. Looks like the Clone Flag still needs to be set even though imaging done through a usb key bypasses all Deep Freeze drivers. Not sure if I understand it, but that's what I've been finding.
