Is buying a £400 smartphone worth it?

Not talking about the hardware or specifications, because 12 months down the line it gets replaced with something "better, faster, more efficient", as with all technology advancements.

Could someone explain how can spending £400 on a smartphone be considered a worthy buy?

Convince me. :D

Personally, if I'm going to pay for an expensive smartphone, I'm going to use it for a long time. I've been using the iPhone 5s since 2013 and will continue to do so until it stops getting software updates (two years from now). I'm not a big phone user, so getting the latest stuff doesn't bother me. I'm not paying for a new smartphone every time the next version comes out.

There's nothing wrong with buying an expensive phone, just make sure the purchase is worth it... Ask yourself, do you really need it to do what you need to do? If you do buy an expensive phone, I'd keep it for a long time (years).

You can get a cheap one but it might need quick replacing, depends on the situation.

I'm still using the Sony Xperia Z1 and it's fine for me, like brand new condition and got it 6 months ago passed down, no problems.

it depends on the market and brands
In my country I can buy a galaxy s7 for <$300. a few months ago, it was double
I bought my Sony Z3 for $390-400 but now it's only ~$140-150 :(

try to find a good deal for it. £400 are too much IMO
I'm staying in Europe, I know how expensive everything is but I can still find a phone with reasonable price, of course still much more expensive than in my country

It goes like this - you have a girlfriend and she thinks can't afford a phone worth 400 bucks, the next day you have one in your hand. ;)

Well i guess this overpricing problem is "our" own stupid fault (with "our" i mean those people who buy a new phone every now and then, whenever they feel the need to and dont care to pay 100 dollars more, for some useless new functions)

Maximum i will ever spend on a phone is 300-400$ ;)

No it's not. An expensive car, tv, house etc do give a higher value but as you say yourself, specs keep getting upgraded day by day.
Better to buy a reputable brand with good after sales service than a trendy brand with less of a footprint.

But, expensive phones do give a temporary but enjoyable status boost.

Agreed. You have to be sensible and think about what you really are going to be using the device for. I personally still have an older Samsung phone myself. It still works and can run the majority of recent apps. What more do you need? ;)

You can use an iPhone many years .
Not sure you can do the same with a wiko Lenny for example .
And security . iPhone seems to be better for security than android .

But I don't know if I will buy another one . They costs too much .

It's worth to not get spied by some backdoor preinstalled in some cheap android

I will come back when some other ideas come to my mind

I just buy a phone few days the new Huawei Mate 9 Pro and I can say that is much better than IPhone 7 or Galaxy s7 and much cheaper than those. What I like most is that have a lot of possibilities like: app lock, app permissions (you can restrict app permissions), also you can restrict app to use the internet and more.

I don't like spending too much on phones, and my opinion is to either buy used iPhone (or older version like 6, 6s, SE) if you like functionality. If you want better specs, camera, etc my suggestion is Android powered phone, preferably Chinese brands that offer more for less money and have proven its worth, like Huawei, OnePlus, Xiaomi or ZTE (some phones).
