Do most malware target and corrupt File Versioning (File History) in Windows 11? Does it make sense setting it up or is it a waste of time?

While it's true that some malware can target and corrupt File Versioning, it's still a valuable tool for data recovery. It's not a waste of time to set it up, but it should be part of a broader security strategy that includes regular backups and robust anti-malware software.

I was under impression that file versioning is disabled since Windows 10, MS prefers OneDrive's file versioning instead. Besides yes, malware generally performs commands like:
Code:
vssadmin delete shadows /for=c: /all /quiet

How does OneDrive do file versioning automatically?

It is definitely not useless, File Versioning is not a feature that is supposed to protect you against ransomware, it is supposed to allow you to restore a file when you've made inadvertent changes. From this pint of view, it is very useful. You are supposed to take other actions, like creating few other back-ups on different mediums as well as running quality security software, combined with good habits. That way, you will not lose your data.

File versioning is not a protection layer, it allows you to roll back a file to a previous point in time, even if you have saved over it. Versioning is available in many apps as a built-in, automated feature and as part of native macOS and Windows backup solutions.
