Serious Discussion I've been watching video reviews here on MWT and it looks like Defender and Kaspersky are tops. But if you choose not to use those 2...

... Then it looks like some of the other top contenders are combining and becoming clones of one another (Avast, AVG, Avira, and Norton). So if those are out, and each seemed to have some weaknesses, what remains, to be considered a top contender, besides Bitdefender... ?

you are right. I was in the Bitdefender forum some hours ago and saw bad experiences in terms of performance I had some bugs with Bitdefender, slow internet, BSOD on my sister's laptop, problem with the internet download manager(this one was solved a long time ago but experienced guys know what I'm talking about) so even Bitdefender is a no go.
to be honest the first choice for everyone who's experienced is Kaspersky It is sad that this company is ahead of many others and the choices are getting narrower every day with this gen digital thing and others having problems. just look at what they are doing with their detection, and their remediation techniques, their cloud is powerful and the overall package is stable much fewer bugs.

the US ban makes things complicated, we people outside the US can use this but with stress!! I had it installed on my friends and family and some of my friend's business PCs and Macs.

there seem to be few other options than Kaspersky, gdata is good too seems they are a good alternative to Kaspesky even eset is good if you are not a happy clicker.

Let me add my 0.02$ to this. Don't judge any product by their forums. People will rarely register to a product's forum to say what an wonderful experience they had so you'll see only those who had problems you may never have.

If at all possible try to test it on your own machine.

I don't know what is the problem with Microsoft Defender so that people always looking for something to replace it, I always try other AVs just for the sake of trying something new, but really MS Defender now is good enough for home users.

I completely agree with you, not just on products, even everything online, people write reviews to blame not to thank.

No doubt people here at MWT like Defender and being you all are much smarter than myself, I do believe you are right.

Here comes the "but"..... But it does impact my system, especially on file transfer or when synching via Directory Opus (which by the way is a great piece of software).

This has led me to try lighter solutions. So far the lightest has been K7 and Panda.

But I have settled on using Zone-alarm Extreme Security, which is not as fast as K7 or Panda, but doesn't impact like Defender, and according to Shadowra (see video review), it is very effective at providing needed protection for consumers.
