i would like to get a free Surf/ phishing protection software that can go along nicely with CIS 6.

Your browsers already provide Phishing protection, although Chrome benefits from Malware Protection over Firefox.

You can use browser extensions such as Web of Trust or BitDefender TrafficLight;

yes, Open DNS is better in blocking phishing sites + BD trafficlight extensions for malicious sites will be nice config.
