Connected cars
Secure by design

With information technologies becoming an integral part of areas not traditionally considered to be related to computers, the importance of cybersecurity is growing. These days, in many cases, the safety of physical objects — and even human lives — depends on strong cybersecurity. This is how things are going (or how it will be in the very near future) in the car industry: According to Gartner’s prediction, a quarter billion connected cars will be on the road by 2020. That is why it is vital to implement the idea of information security right from the very start, at the stage of designing those connected cars.

Im sorry, but who ever thought of connecting vehicles to the cloud needs smacked. Already in place are ECU "electronic control unit" depending on the vehicle, there can be many incorporated into a single unit called a powertrain control module "PCM", these control many various functions of the vehicle already such as engine, ABS, speed sensors, fuel injection, airbags, ect. Now lets tie all this into a smart system connected to the cloud and potentially turn our vehicle into a 4,000 pound out of control projectile should some hacker be bored or looking to demonstrate his over inflated ego. Sounds intelligent to me, what could possibly go wrong?

I could be wrong, but I'm sure these critical systems would be separated from the console display that gives the user more basic options such as: GPS, Music, backup cam, etc.

Vehicle tracking and disabling services already exist, requiring extra hardware to be installed on the borrowers vehicle from the lender, cloud services will lead to convenience of not having to install such devices if they can just remotely shut the car down and track it to repossess it. I do not see them, not taking advantage of this, and because of, can not see them keeping these systems separate, but then again, this part is speculation.

For anyone interested, check out the current market leader Blackberry (the guys with the phones). The QNX OS is used commonly today in the infotainment systems of autos, and they are branching out:

How BlackBerry QNX’s Multi-Level Security Can Safeguard Your Car

and even cooler is an AV for autos:

BlackBerry working with automakers on anti-hack tool: analyst
Nice post and interesting read...

Vehicles increasingly rely on dozens of computers that connect to each other as well as the internet, mobile networks and Bluetooth communications systems that make them vulnerable to remote hacks.

I don't think you can secure your car with "Software" if you know what I mean ;) but better than nothing I guess.

Kaspersky is ahead of the game here.

I've been advocating for AV companies to focus on devices/vehicles/IoT for years. This is a big thing that is almost totally neglected right now. Any company getting a head start into the game of securing integrated devices/vehicles is going to be way at a huge advantage..

Agreed 110% a very dumb idea for sure.;)

The very second something new is invented, the next second someone will think about 'cloud connecting' it..

DIshwashers, door locks, scales, even dildos and hammers...

Car developers should treat vehicles like closed systems and air-gapped security. If you want into a vehicles systems you'll need to power the vehicle up and plug it in to a diagnostic station. None of this remote crap. You just know the CIA/NSA (etc) are loving the idea of everyone driving 'connected' vehicles.. An absolute dream for them and the potential for them to murder someone via remote control of a vehicle would probably be a very real danger once that happens. Even worse, guaranteed they will use these vehicles as mobile camera and surveillance platforms against citizens. Each car will be a mobile surveillance network they can tap into.

Spineless lawmakers won't defend us.. I fear for the future, more often than not.

how so, I thought an integral part of car AI security and safety is all cars on the road talking to one another, to keep traffic moving as fast as possible without bumping into one another (and pedestrians).

30 years is way to long for it! Technologie envovle so fast u simply cant believe it. Look where we was 10-20 Years ago and look what we can do now with technologie. Its amazing and technologie is unstopable. Its like it envovle itself. self-driving cares are in test for along time now and it will not need another 30 years to get them. Maybe flying cars in 30 years is more realistic. Maybe u dont need an av in 30 years for internet. maybe the human race is connected itself than with internet and other technologie, who knows. our minds are unable to know what will come. Just look at the black projects from grovement and big cooperations whe does not know about and they dont want the public to know about. I realy, realy dont want to know what they can do and we are unaware of it.. its scarry.
