Advice Request Laptop replaced with a Chromebook

Can Laptop be replaced with a Chromebook for basic work like listening to music, watching videos, browsing the internet and online microsoft office (Office 365 online) ? I want to connect an external HDD for storage into Chromebook. Please share your valuable suggestion. I'm looking for a good Chromebook below $200 with good battery performance. Can I connect USB WiFi adapter for internet? I think Microsoft Office 365 online version helps me to edit or view Word, Excel of PowerPoint files. Can I connect mouse?
