I would say there is a good chance of this happening! One can read this quote below and understand the important role Linux has already been playing in the field.

Google leads the pack with 66 percent market share, and Google's servers all run on Linux. So do most of Yahoo's, according to the Netcraft site survey. Even Microsoft Bing uses the Akamai content delivery network, which also runs on Linux. It's likely that none of these companies or their services would even exist if it weren't for the massive scalability provided by low-cost Linux servers.

Linux is great for servers... but for personal computers blech

With the exception of ChromeOS of course lol

Linux its new in the 'Home Users' field....It needs more time to grow but it has a enthusiastic community which is good.
The fact that this OS is free , is a major advantage. The main downside is that they're are too many Linux builds which can confuse the more inexperienced users.

it would be a better if their were fewer so that they could be faster and better developed :)

Once I have my new laptop it will run Ubuntu on WMware :) The downside is the hardware support :(
