Linux Mint 22.1 is expected to arrive this December with the upcoming Cinnamon 6.4 desktop environment featuring a brand-new theme.
The Linux Mint team published their latest newsletter today, revealing that they’re working on a Night Light feature for the Cinnamon desktop and out-of-the-box support for Framework laptops.

Linux Mint 22.1 is in the works, slated for release this December, and it will come with the soon-to-be-released Cinnamon 6.4 desktop environment, which will introduce a brand-new theme and a Night Light feature to help reduce eyestrain when working at night on your computer.

The new Night Light feature will replace the Redshift implementation used in previous Linux Mint releases and be integrated into the settings. In addition, it will work with both Wayland and X11 sessions as Linux Mint is still working on defaulting to Wayland in the future release.

Along with the new default Cinnamon theme in Linux Mint 22.1, the team will also introduce a “Force Quit” dialog rewritten in Clutter that will appear when an application is frozen and no longer responds, modernized media buttons and Workspace OSDs, a new status applet, as well as improved notifications, animations, and main menu.

On top of that, the Linux Mint team revealed a partnership with Framework to make future Linux Mint releases work out-of-the-box on their customizable laptops. For now, both teams will focus on the flagship Cinnamon edition of Linux Mint for Framework Laptop 13.

“They want to achieve full compatibility with Linux Mint and the Cinnamon desktop. That’s also very important to us because it means we can recommend this brand within our community without having to worry about compatibility issues,” said Linux Mint project leader Clement Lefebvre.
Coming near the Christmas holidays, Linux Mint 22.1 will feature a much-improved package management system. Just like the Linux Mint 22 “Wilma” release, the upcoming version will be powered by Linux kernel 6.8 and based on Ubuntu 24.04.1 LTS (Noble Numbat).

It's great to see Linux Mint 22.1 incorporating a Night Light feature in the Cinnamon desktop, which can help reduce eyestrain for users working at night. The out-of-the-box support for Framework laptops is a promising development, too. It's clear that the Linux Mint team is making significant strides in improving user experience and compatibility. Looking forward to the release in December!
