A 19-year old man has been arrested by British police in the Shetland Islands, under suspicion of launching hacking attacks against a number of websites.

Officers from the Metropolitan Police Service's Police Central e-Crime Unit (PCeU) arrested the man as part of an international investigation into the activities of the Anonymous and LulzSec hacktivist groups.

The man, who was arrested at a residential address in the Shetland Islands, is said to have used the online nickname "Topiary" and acted as a spokesperson for the groups via forums such as Twitter.

The suspected hacker is currently being transported to a central London police station, and a search is taking place at his home.

"Topiary" has been identified in the past as having a leading role in hactivist attacks launched by the LulzSec and Anonymous groups.

No one can't hide from government if they are not rich and stay in their native country.

UK Cops 'duped' into arresting wrong LulzSec suspect

The 19-year-old Scotsman fingered Wednesday as a central figure of the LulzSec hacking crew is a fall guy who was framed to take the heat off the real culprit, according to unconfirmed claims from a rival group.

“We believe MET Police got the wrong guy and it happens because of lot of disinformation floating on the web,” a Thursday post on the LulzSec Exposed blog said. “LulzSec and Anonymous members are Master trolls and they are good at this.”

According to the post, penned by members of a group calling itself the Web Ninjas, the real LulzSec figure known as Topiary is a 23-year-old Swede, who stole the handle from a low-level member after he ran afoul of its parent group Anonymous. The mistaken identity was part of an elaborate ruse to confuse authorities about Topiary's true identity, the speculation claims.

LulzSec hacking: teenager ‘had cache of 750,000 passwords’

A London court heard this morning how 18-year-old Jake Davis allegedly had the login passwords of 750,000 people on his computer when he was arrested in the Shetland Islands last week.

Davis is suspected by the authorities of being "Topiary", the public face of the Anonymous and LulzSec hacktivist groups.

According to a report in the Daily Telegraph, Westminster Magistrates' Court heard that Davis was charged with five offences including unauthorised computer access and conspiracy to carry out a denial-of-service attack against the Serious Organised Crime Agency's (SOCA) website, which overloaded the site with traffic.

Furthermore, prosecutors are reported to have claimed that Davis's laptop was found to contain the fake article announcing Rupert Murdoch's death that visitors to The Sun's hacked website saw for a period of time earlier this month.

This Jake kid will have the time of his life in the next months......Participating in even the simplest of hacking operations is punishable by up to 10 years in prison in the UK, and up to 20 years in the US.
Davis' defense seems to be that he served simply as a mouthpiece for LulzSec and Anonymous and didn't actually participate in any of the hacking activities associated with the two organizations. So we will have a interesting case here.
