A few hours ago, anti-malware software provider Malwarebytes announced that it had completed the acquisition of ZeroVulnerabilityLabs Inc., a company that specializes in vulnerability, exploit and security research.

The acquisition will enable Malwarebytes to expand its anti-malware suite.

“I am very pleased to announce the acquisition of ZeroVulnerabilityLabs and to welcome its employees to the Malwarebytes team,” noted Malwarebytes CEO, Marcin Kleczynski.

“We are always looking to improve upon our existing offerings, and have done so with the addition of ZeroVulnerabilityLabs’ technology. The proactive nature of this technology makes it a great addition and compliment to the existing Malwarebytes software suite.”

“We are excited to be joining the Malwarebytes team and to work to advance the latest anti-exploit R & D efforts, which we started at ZeroVulnerabilityLabs,” commented Pedro Bustamante, co-founder and CEO of ZeroVulnerabilityLabs.

“It is a great fit between two companies who are fighting malware in innovative and effective ways in order to protect both users and companies from the most dangerous and complex types of attacks.”

ZeroVulnerabilityLabs’ flagship product, ExploitShield, has been rebranded as a Malwarebytes product and named Malwarebytes Anti-Exploit. A beta version of the product is available for a limited time on zerovulnerabilitylabs.com.

HUGE news! :D

Same product, new name.. with better long-term development.

Was the original ExploitShield ever released from beta stages?

I don't think it even left beta stage and it never blocked anything when I tested it. I went to all of kinds of bad websites and not a single block.
However Avast, SmartScreen, Google Chrome, Firefox, WOT and ZoneAlarm Free together blocked all malicious sites.

We have a thread somewhere on the forum about the main question was it even worth using if you already have all your software updated?

Hopefully Malwarebytes will improve it.

Thanks.:D

Did you test it properly?

Well, as far as I know, it doesn't use a blacklist or whitelist to block zero-day arbitrary code execution. Also, the free beta version only protected the web browser and components like Java.

I have never used the product myself so I don't have any hands-on experience. I was waiting for it to go stable.

I tested it correctly and there is a thread on Wilder's security forum where other users tested it and got the same results.

The only time it would block anything on bad websites is if you were using out-dated browser, flash or Java and had your real-time AV disabled. If you had all of your software updated and AV enabled it would blocked nothing.

If was really shocked when Malwarebytes bought this product since it was unstable and was getting so many bad user reviews on security forums.

I'm not sure what plans Malwarebytes has for this product but if anyone can make it useful they would be the ones to do so.

We will just have to wait for a final release and see how it works.
You can't judge a beta product since the finished product maybe much different.

Thanks.:D

I think Malwarebytes will develop Exploitshield to a better program. I have tested the beta but it had some issues that were not resolved. Can't turn it "on" when installed with Avast IS Build 1489, there was no resolution so I uninstalled it permanently.

Either someone says it's worthless or it isn't worth the risk of a beta...I have it on 2 of 4 of my PC's!

Has it actually blocked any exploits with all of your software updated?

Thanks.:D

It hasn't blocked anything...in the past Firefox has actually done an adequate job of blocking questionable sites!

I'm thinking is product will only be useful to users who don't keep their online software updated.

However most browsers, Flash Player, Java and other online software have auto update features because it is very easy for even novice users to keep their software updated which will block exploits. So I question the usefulness of this product especially when it is not reported by any of its users to block anything. Another factor is exploits usually don't target home users, they target large companies where they can get a lot of data.

Thanks.:D
