Eighteen months ago, at E3 2015, Microsoft unveiled the Xbox Elite Wireless Controller, an upgraded version of its controller for the 'hardcore' gamer. With a premium soft-touch finish, and stainless steel accents, the Elite also offers unique customizations compared with the 'standard' controller, including removable interchangeable paddles, sensitivity adjustment features, and a wide range of button assignment options.

But the Elite has only been available in a single color combination - albeit a pretty stylish one - of black and silver. That stands in stark contrast with the latest controller released alongside the Xbox One S, the look of which can be customized with around 8 million combinations through the Xbox Design Lab.

Now, though, Microsoft has detailed its collaboration with SCUF on a range of Designed for Xbox products, created specifically to allow gamers to enhance the look of its high-end controller. Microsoft originally hinted at those plans in June 2015, but it's unclear why it's taken so long for these new options to finally come to market.

Whatever the reason for the long wait, Microsoft has now announced the SCUF Elite Customization Program. "Starting at $149.95," Microsoft said, "fans can build their ideal Xbox Elite Wireless Controller and choose from a selection of unique designs and color treatments, including faceplates, buttons, trim and SCUF accessories. Pricing may vary based on the customization options selected."

A wide variety of customization options are available when buying a new Elite controller, just some of which you can see in this article. You can see more of the design collections on SCUF's website here.

Gamers can also pick up the SCUF ELITE Paddle Control System & Directional Bias D-pad Kit, which is available now for $39.99. Microsoft says that it...

...uses the iconic Paddle Hatch System, along with an interchangeable D-pad. SCUF’s paddle control system is built into the battery door, making it easily interchangeable with the existing battery door in your Xbox Elite Wireless Controller. The D-pad was constructed with ergonomics and quick access in mind, featuring a directional bias design that aligns with a gamer’s natural hand placement.

Another option which is "coming soon" is the Elite Precision Thumbsticks and Pro Grip Handle Kit, priced at $29.95, and which will be available in five colors: black, white, red, blue and green.

It features six interchangeable thumbsticks in various sizes with SCUF’s iconic logo debossed in its military grade rubber thumbsticks and grip system. The interchangeable thumbsticks feature three domed sticks in regular, medium and long sizes, along with three concave thumbsticks in regular, medium, and long sizes. Fans can easily swap between the existing rubberized diamond grips on their Xbox Elite Wireless Controller and SCUF’s pro grip panels with the tool included with the kit.

If you already own an Elite Wireless Controller, you can purchase either of the two accessory packs as add-ons - but if you want the new custom trim and button colors, you'll have to buy a whole new controller and have it built from scratch with the full customizations of your choice.
