Microsoft has announced changes to its controversial ‘Recall’ feature following a flood of criticism over potential security and data privacy risks. In a post to the firm’s blog, Pavan Davuluri, VP for Windows and devices, shared an update after initially causing upset with the tool’s ability to screenshot potentially sensitive information.

“Even before making Recall available to customers, we have heard a clear signal that we can make it easier for people to choose to enable Recall on their Copilot+ PC and improve privacy and security safeguards,” Davuluri said.

To do this, Microsoft has said that it will give users a clearer opt-in choice which, unless proactively chosen, will render the tool turned off by default. Microsoft originally stated that the feature would be off by default.

Update on Recall security and privacy architecture
Recall is an opt-in experience. During the set-up experience for Copilot+ PCs, users are given a clear option whether to opt-in to saving snapshots using Recall. If a user doesn’t proactively choose to turn it on, it will be off, and snapshots will not be taken or saved. Users can also remove Recall entirely by using the optional features settings in Windows.

Update on Recall security and privacy architecture

Yeah, right... Knowing Microsoft they'll release an update which will enable it for everyone and then when people realize this, they'll say it was a bug that's in process of getting fixed. Remember when Recall was listed as a feature that can be removed? Well, Microsoft was quick to respond how it was a bug that will be fixed and how users won't get an option of removing it.

If I see Recall on my PC, I'm immediately doing a clean installation of LTSC version free of any of their bullshit.

One dumb idea too far for me.
Actually, the idea is grounded in scientific fact - of how the human memory works and what it prefers.

Human memory is much more efficient at recalling images than character strings. Microsoft's intent was to make browser history work in a way that would be much more effective for most users to recall.

Conspiracy theory. Users have accused Linux and Unix projects of conspiracies too.

Microsoft derives no benefit from forcing the Recall feature onto everyone.

There have been false claims and wild speculations that Microsoft intends to harvest data captured by Recall and sell it (monetize it). Others speculate that it is government intelligence and security agency minions behind the Recall feature and pulling the strings with Microsoft as a willing collaborator against populations. It just ain't true but it sure is typical stupid human behavior on the internet.

Next thing the Democrats will accuse the Pro-Russian RepubliKKKans of being behind Recall to assist Putin while kicking the homeless in the teeth. The QAnon MAGAs will accuse the baby & toddler-snatching Democrats of intending to use Recall to track their political enemies. Nobody is getting it. Microsoft and the Recall puppet masters have fooled everyone. Cohagen and Hauser are behind the entire Recall effort.

People actually believe this stuff. It is so entertaining. It also shows how profoundly broken the human species is.
