Microsoft has just released the October optional update for Windows 11 versions 23H2 and 22H2, which brings a couple of new features that have been in testing with Insiders in recent weeks. While Windows 11 version 24H2 isn’t getting its monthly optional update yet, the one for Windows 10 version 22H2 has also been released today.

For Windows 11 users who have yet to install the latest version 24H2 of the OS, today’s optional KB5044380 patch includes some new features that will roll out gradually, and others that will be immediately available. Here are the highlights

Copilot key settings: On PCs with a Copilot key, it’s now possible to configure this key to open a different app. This option is available in Settings > Personalization > Text input.

Gamepad keyboard: The new Gamepad keyboard layout for the Windows on-screen keyboard that was introduced on the Dev Channel last week is now rolling out. It matches the design of the on-screen keyboard on Xbox consoles, and it can be controlled with an Xbox controller.

Notifications suggestions: Users can now stop the suggestions to turn off notifications from certain apps right from a notification or by going to Settings > System > Notifications.

Narrator improvements: A new Narrator shortcut will let users press the Narrator key + Ctrl + X to copy what Narrator last spoke to the clipboard. Narrator is also getting the ability to auto read the contents of an email message in the new Outlook for Windows app.

For Windows 10 users, today’s KB5045594 optional patch starts the rollout of a new account manager on the Start menu that’s similar to the one on Windows 11. Users now need to select the ellipses (…) next to Sign out to change to a different user, and the Lock command is now on the power menu.
