Sony is working on a more powerful PlayStation 4, if a report from Kotaku is correct. The report says the upgraded PS4 would come with increased graphical capabilities to run games at 4K resolution.

Developer sources told Kotaku about the improved PS4. It's not currently known if current owners will be able to upgrade their hardware or if this will be a brand new system altogether. Whatever the case is, Sony has apparently started talking to developers about it.

According to Kotaku, the "PS4.5" will come with an upgraded GPU that will support games running at 4K resolution and enhance games for PlayStation VR. Kotaku notes that "PS4.5" might not be its official name--it could be a nickname used by its developer sources.

Kotaku claims that it was able to confirm the news with at least four separate sources. However, their sources are unsure of when it will come to market and how much it will cost.

We will keep you updated as more information of this supposedly upgraded PS4 becomes available.

This isn't the first time we've heard about a possible PS4 upgrade. Sony executive Masayasu Ito said the company might consider a "high-power" PS4. On the other side, Xbox head Phil Spencer said we might see an Xbox One hardware upgrade.

Recently, Microsoft revealed plans to make the more powerful Xbox One, although the details are still very rare (it's a new console? Are peripherals?). Sony seems to be not far behind: came the rumor that the company is also planning a PS4 improved, with increased processing power.

The information came from Kotaku, who hired some developers have revealed the plan "PS4,5" which would be able to run games at 4K resolution. Just like the Xbox, it is unclear how this would be done. Does the current owners of a PS4 will be able to upgrade their consoles? They will have to buy a new video game? Is information that is not yet known.

Conversations with developers, however, report that the new version will have a new video card that would allow the implementation of 4K games, adding processing power to the console. That would make a big difference especially in the PlayStation VR games, virtual reality glasses company, which depend on high resolution and graphics details with a high frame rate to create a good experience.

We do not know the name. Kotaku says that developers called the new model PS4,5, but there is no way to confirm if it is just a code name or a joke. Another person came to call the new PS4K Island, in reference to the graphics.

Unlike Microsoft, Sony does not confirm this plan. When questioned, the company gives the standard answer that it can not comment on rumors or speculation.

If they do that they are just shouting that pc gaming is better than they own console, because one of the main points of consoles is time you have them without need to upgrade.

People got to have them high resolution, high FPS gameplay or it's garbage. Haven't played games in about a month now. Have more interest in malware on a VM. Current games are very boring. Just an opinion of course...

As usual nothing surprise here, anything that become hit on the technology definitely improve especially those mentioned virtual reality.

Honestly many users nowadays prefer to play games on high end desktop than those consoles because of its price and practicality. ;)

Ehhhh.......console is okay , but I'm still rock n roll with my beast gaming rig , plus I prefer keyboard and mouse over the controller. But good to see PS4 manage to get to 1080P.

To keep up with current trends, I don't find this surprising. Just look at the pace of smartphones/tablets devices, more powerful and efficient almost every 6-12 months.

As for 4K Games on PS4 / Xbox One, I do not think it's an issue since I enjoy gaming on 1080P panels, and I haven't enough to go buy anything boasting 4K resolution.

How many AAA games run at 4K (or higher) / 30 fps (or higher), how much do you need to spend, and how long before you need to upgrade your hardware for newer (more demanding) titles. Rhetorical question.
