Nintendo's NES Classic Edition was more of a success that many could have predicted, selling out online within minutes, even crashing Amazon along the way.
The NES Classic Edition is a miniaturized version of the popular NES (Nintendo Entertainment System) console, and comes pre-installed with 30 classic games.
Nintendo announced this mini-NES over the summer, and while there was some interest from the gaming community, many felt like it was only a marketing stunt to excite the Nintendo fanbase before the company launched its next-gen Switch console next year.
After taking pre-orders, Nintendo released the console on November 11, via Amazon, BestBuy, Target, GameSpot and a few other selected resellers.
Retro gaming fans crashed Amazon's online store
As soon as the console went on sale online, users reported that within a minute Amazon stock was all sold out. Stocks at other stores didn't last long either.
Users eagerly waiting with their fingers on the refresh button, caused an accidental hand-cranked F5 DDoS on Amazon servers, the online store crashing for a few minutes after the NES Classic Edition became available.
Taking into account that Amazon, through its AWS service, provides some of the most reliable and well-reviewed hosting and cloud computing services, the fact that NES fanboys managed to crash Amazon is a testament of how much people wanted to get their hands on the new console.
Beware of Craigslist scammers
As is the cases with highly sought after products, Craigslist filled with ads for NES Classic Edition consoles with prices ranging from $200 to $850. The NES Classic Edition's official price is $60.
Gamers criticized Nintendo for failing to understand the product's real value and launching the console without enough stock to satisfy the demand. Critics also griped about the NES Classic Edition controller cords, which were only 2.5-feet-long.
